Product Description

Review

A drought has caused the level of Cranwell Lake to drop. Drop further that it ever has since 1972. At the end of a row of staithes near the beach, a body floats just beneath the surface. For Hannah Morton it is a return to her teenage years. For detectives Porteous and Stout it is the start of a trawl through the missing persons files in search of an identity - only to discover that Michael Gray is not who he seemed... After a slow start the plot gradually gains pace, switching between Hannah's memories, the police investigation and a fresh murder case. Ann Cleeves leaves the reader guessing till the end - a surprise finish unhinted at during the preceding pages. A good, solid English detective novel with the added bonus of Cleeve's finely drawn, often troubled, main players. - Lucy Watson

Product Description

A vivid psychological suspense novel - a novel that puts Ann Cleeves in a class with Ruth Rendell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ann Cleeves - This is as good as British crime writing gets, 17 Sep 2002

This review is from: The Sleeping and the Dead (Paperback)
Hannah Morton is a single mum who works as a prison librarian; she lives with her teenage daughter Rosie, who will be going to university next year.
But thirty years ago, Hannah's boyfriend went missing and now he's turned up again, dead at the bottom of a lake with a chain around his ankles.
Ann Cleeves, in this latest offering, gives us everything required of a good crime novel. The plotting is tense and intricate and the characterization, especially of Hannah and Rosie, is rivetting. Add to that a conscious avoidence of cliche and a narrative approach which makes this author a stylist of distinction, and you will begin to understand why I found it very difficult to put this book down.
The Sleeping and the Dead is as good as British crime writing gets, and that includes all-comers, old and young on the contemporary scene.
Buy it now. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars well worth a read!, 11 Oct 2003

to me the back of this book was enough to make me want this excellent novel. I bought it as part of my quest to try new authors. It takes a little to get into this book but generally it has all the makings of a really good read! Hanna Morton is a librarian in a prison and has forgotten the secrets of her past until a body is found in her old home town which is her ex boyfriend "michael" she was the last person to see him alive. This book takes you through her current life and through her life as a teenager when she knew michael.
It is cleverly written and gives you a surprise at the end.
worth reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, 16 Feb 2006

This was really good fun to read. The way the story was brought together at the end was a little too coincidental to be realistic, but this is escapism!
