A special mystery 22 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Officer Kate Delafield has worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for a quarter of a century, but never once stepped out of the closet. During her tour, a group of macho, extremely homophobic males always ran LAPD. If she ever confessed her sexual persuasion, she would probably be looking for work. She even hides the truth from her partner Detective Joe Cameron, who leans to the left on social issues.

Their first case together takes Kate and Joe to the La Brea Tar Pits where Australian tourists found the corpse of an elderly male with an icepick wound to his kidney. On the same day as the murder, workers at an excavation site nearby uncover the remains of a hominoid estimated to be over two-million years old. The police link the fossil to the icepick murder. They also learn they are dealing with the Peking Man skeleton that vanished without a trace during the early stages of WW II, which leads to the CIA taking an interest in the case. Kate becomes more determined to learn what really happened.

Katherine V. Forrest smoothly combines social issues within her police procedurals that turns her novels into mysteries that leaves readers thinking about solutions. The audience observes the mental anguish, fear, and difficulty for a gay woman working in a male environment. Ms. Forrest also provides readers with an entertaining who-done-it that highlights the individuals involved in the case. SLEEPING BONES centers on how relationships hinder and help an investigation. The tale focuses on Kate and her significant other, with her new partner, and even with a prime suspect. Fans of police procedurals will take great pleasure from reading this thought provoking novel that rattles the bones in closets.

"When an elderly man is brutally slain at the La Brea Tar Pits, LAPD Detective Kate Delafield finds herself digging up startling information that could uncover humanity's ancient past, and at the same time, expose the city's corrupt present. With more at stake than just a pile of bones, Kate has to rebuild the pieces of a timeless puzzle, and make sure they all fit--before a remorseless killer decides to make her a part of history..."

If you're looking for great lesbian crime fiction, this is in my mind one of the 5 best series to read. In the series so far:

1. Amateur City (1984)
2. Murder At the Nightwood Bar (1986)
3. The Beverly Malibu (1989)
4. Murder By Tradition (1991)
5. Liberty Square (1996)
6. Apparition Alley (1997)
7. Sleeping Bones (1999)
8. Hancock Park (2004)

as the subplots thicken 22 Dec 1999
By linda - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Poor Kate. There are more twists and turns in this book then the race track at Watkins Glen. And that's what bothers me about this book. The basic plot, the basic murder mystery that Katherine Forrest writes so well is here. But the additional subplots of the long-lost brother and Aimee's best friend's abusive ex detract from the main story line. Either one of the sub plots could and should work independently. The other sub plot, Kate's unexpected passionate embrace, in my mind, needed to be developed further. That would provide additional tension to the developing plot.

Sleeping Bones 3 Jan 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Katherine V. Forrest just gets better and better, using some literary techniques in a sophisticated manner. Once again, KVF has done her research thoroughly, her plot is tight and makes sense, her character development is superb, and her portrayal of lesbians is credible and sensitive. KVF is a long-standing feminist, a role model for the lesbian movement, an icon in her time. She is talented, honest, and to be revered. Right on, woman! The world needs more strong voices like yours.
Disappointing 14 Oct 2009
By LA - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Katherine V. Forrest is supposedly one of the best lesbian writers ever.

Sleeping Bones, however, is a poorly written book. The subplots go nowhere. For that matter, the plot is poorly constructed and implausible.

The dialogue isn't realistic. Furthermore, there are some awfully written passages that a good editor should have caught.

The main character isn't strongly written or, for that matter, likeable. The other characters are largely stereotypes.

Maybe this was just one bad outing, but I was expecting better quality from "a pioneer in lesbian literature."
