4.0 out of 5 stars Languid cosmic vibes 20 Sep 2008
Format:Audio CD
Blissful easy-soul vibe from Mr Ra: electric bass and guitar, electric piano and vibes, soothing water-wash vocals. The tracks build around swinging, lazy riffs, as much about colour, vibe and atmosphere as theme-solos-theme (though there is nice trumpet and sax work). 'The Door of the Cosmos' is the most dance-like, the other two trot along more lazily: the title track in particular sticks in your head, Ra's gently mysterious vocals towards the end stroking the sounds around, the intergalactic magician gently waving his wand as things slide into being (and dig that gently yelping muted trumpet, sonic magic if ever I heard it). Not a challenging listen at any stretch (and only a little over 30 minutes long), but no less authentic Ra for that.

"I wanna speak of...black beauty to you...I wanna speak of...black beauty to you...Mmmhmmm...mmmhmmm....mmmmhmmm...sleeping beauty sleeping beauty sleeping...sleeping beauty sleeping beauty sleeping..."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awaken to the Sounds of Spring 2 Oct 2008
By County Lineman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
With up to 28 musicians - including both acoustic and electric bass, electric guitarists and the signature reed and brass sections - Sun Ra is delving into groove-orientated performances in this 1979 release.

The title track is the centerpiece, with Sun Ra's introduction on electric piano and the band then setting a mystical foundation for the vocals, led by June Tyson. Springtime Again and Door of the Cosmos have a sublime beauty which transcends time and place.

As if the vestiges of winter has finally given way to spring, there is a freshness of outlook and vision in the music which makes the album a gem in the vast Sun Ra discography.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best Sun Ra you'll ever hear 9 May 2010
By Peter A. Fiore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't usually write reviews but this cd is amazing. the band is under full control and the arrangements are exciting. Gilmore is all over the place and Ra's obbligatos are the best ever. "Springtime Again" is one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear. the chants are wonderful and Gilmore's solo ranks with
anything that's ever been recorded--Coleman Hawkins "Body and Soul," Trane's "Flamenco Sketches, Charles Llyod's "Forest Flower". It's exquisite. get this cd now.
5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Groove And Melody 4 Dec 2010
By Scott McFarland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
One of the great underheard Saturns, now available on CD. Like "Lanquidity" and "On Jupiter", Ra here takes his band towards late-night "quiet storm" groove. The grooves are deep and the melody sweet, you'll rarely hear music as great in those two ways at the same time. The performances slowly boil. This is somewhere near musical perfection. The only downer is his sexist intonation during the title track, and it really is a downer to me, like a line drawn through the middle of a great painting.
