5.0 out of 5 stars more than just an erotic story 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
For an adult who likes fantasy and erotic literature, this is truly the series of choice. I have never read such a colorful and well written work of this nature. Anne is an expert at expressing the nuances of the characters and settings in this series, and really fuels the imagination with her writing style. Not a read for the weak-at-heart, but for those who can appreciate something much more than your everyday sex story. It is so unusual for a sexual fantasy to be written in such a colorful way and taken beyond anything you could have expected, (into novel form) but if you are open to reading this unique trilogy, you will wonder why more adult fiction of this caliber is not available, and will wish that more would be written!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleeping Beauty Awakens 2 Sep 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Sleeping Beauty awakens to find Prince Charming is taking her to his castle not to make her his wife but take her through an adventure which makes her subject to the whims of the countless inhabitants of his castle. Her adventures continue when she visits the local village in the second novel and is abducted and taken to a Sultan's castle in the third. But in the end her greatest adventure is finding true love.

I read all three of Ann Rice's Sleeping Beauty novel's, and almost every other book she's ever written. I loved her other books because of the sensual, erotic way in which she writes. When I bought the trilogy, I never imagined I would encounter the best erotic fiction I have ever read. I loved the Trilogy. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an open mind, however if you are not, then read at your own risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars well, it certainly ain't disney! 14 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
as someone who works in an adult store, i've seen my fair share of erotica. i've seen the repetative, boring movies. i've read the flimsy fiction in mags. but it wasn't until i read these books that i realised how erotic erotica could be!

so they're not for the faint-hearted, (if the idea of bondage puts you off, maybe read something else). this is no wishy-washy, rose-tinted tale! this is an honest, laid bare look at the most primal of our desires.

the story follows Beauty through her 'development' from girl to woman. we feel her pleasure, her desire, her frustration, her lust... and all the while the book is peppered with fantastic imagery of locations, of people, (and of gizmos).

like sleeping beauty, open your eyes to the world for the first time. read these books and never look back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be still my heart 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I read mixed reviews about the book, but decided to chance it and I have to say it was most definitely worth it. If you're not a fan of submission and bondage in books and lots of spanking lots and lots of spanking then the books not for you. But if you want intelligent erotica that sensually explores the nature of submission then do buy it. Its not about D/S relationships, and if you're looking for something of that nature you won't find it. It's a fairytale fantasy about the whims of the Lords and Ladies and the auction at the village, and a different nature of slavery under the sultan. I highly recommend it, if you're unsure try reading reviews at amazon.com the US site there are a lot more and I found them highly useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars some really good erotica (for a change). 28 Oct 2003
By S. Hapgood VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
There is so much really really BAD erotica around, stuff that commits the ultimate cardinal sin, (in this type of thing), of being BORING, that Anne Rice's trilogy will make a refreshing change for a lot of people. Basically she takes the Sleeping Beauty legend and revamps it for the S&M brigade, and it works very well. Rice is such a skilled writer that the places she writes about in these stories, such as the Queen's palace, the village, and the Sultan's lair all beautifully come to life. I've knocked off a star though for a number of reasons, one is that Beauty herself is a completely vacuous and irritating character (Rice herself apparently got bored with her as the series went on, and focussed more on the other characters instead), it is hard to believe that even someone into submission for pleasure would placidly submit to all the indignities heaped on her here, though perhaps that's just me being naive. (In fact I'm pretty sure it is!). And there are some really stupid absurdities, such as one of the male characters trying to win his mistress's approval by turning himself effectively into a performing circus animal, I found it quite funny that even Beauty lost a lot of interest in him after he had told her all that he'd done! And some of it just goes on far too long. But these lapses are compensated for by some very good stuff indeed. A bit of classy well-written soft porn for a change.

4.0 out of 5 stars TOO MUCH SPANKING 6 Aug 2012
By Marleen TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This review comes with a "for adults only" warning.

Few people will be unfamiliar with the fairytale in which a beautiful princess has to sleep for 100 years before a handsome prince will come to awaken her.
And that is pretty much how this story starts, except that the handsome prince doesn't awaken the beautiful princess with a kiss but by taking her virginity.
The next day the prince tells Beauty and her parents that he is claiming the princess and will take her to his mother's kingdom for training. Although the king and queen object initially they allow the prince to take their daughter with him after they are reminded how they themselves had been trained there and how they had benefitted from it.
For Beauty this is the start of an ordeal. She is stripped naked and made to travel with the prince like that, on full view of everybody they encounter. She is also often and ferociously spanked and slapped, both in private and in public.
Once in the castle this "training" of Beauty is continued and not just by the prince. This is the start of a period during which Beauty will discover things about her self she could never have guessed at; a period that will end with a wilful and unexpected act of rebellion.

I'm not quite sure what to say about this book.
It is a very well written story, and I wouldn't expect anything less from Anne Rice. It also seems to be lacking in imagination though. The endless spanking became quite tedious after the first 150 pages or so.
On the other hand I did like the way the sexual awakening of Beauty is described. The way in which her confusion, despair and shame were described was convincing.
