One of, if not the best book I have ever read!!! From start to finish this story is captivating.
I started the book wanting to know the harsh realities of the institutions of the day, but got so rapped up in Lorenzo Carcaterra's account of a child's life in sixties Hell's Kitchen; I really didn't want the story to move on from there.
The author's ability to bring situations and characters to life adds depth to this powerful story of survival and friendship. If Sleepers was a novel, I would commend the writer for the brilliant story line, but to think it is in fact a true story!
The film is excellent! The book is better!!!
Their friendship stood the test of cruelty, sexual, physical and mental abuse but it also stood the test of time. I sat and sobbed, shook and felt sick at the thought of what those four friends went through. I have never had so much anger and hatred inside me than what I felt towards those prison wardens who made those children victims.
I wanted to stand up, shout and rush to their rescue when reading the accounts of the abuse they were subjected to.
This is the most amazing book i have ever read and never before has literature had such an effect on me. Lorenzo Carcaterra I salute you and your friends for your display of true courage, loyalty and strength. The mould must have been broken when you four where created.
Sleepers has made me aware of the sheltered life I, and the most of us, have led and taken advantage of. I never want to read a book like this again because of how it made me feel but unless you have read Sleepers, forget the film, you will never understand what loyalty and courage can achieve.
Lorenzo Carcaterra is a hero and if I met him I would thank him for speaking out.
You think you've got problems? Read this book and you will feel selfish, self-centred and put your problems to one side... Trust me there are people alot worse off than you.
