Synopsis

The trilogy of SLEEPAWAY CAMP horror movies.
SLEEPAWAY CAMP
What superficially appears to be an ordinary '80s horror flick is actually, upon deeper inspection, something much more bizarre. Angela's family is killed in a boating accident and she gets sent away for the summer to Camp Arawak. Employees and campers start dropping like flies in increasingly odd 'accidents'. Hints of incest, transsexuality, and homo-eroticism lie beneath the surface in this story of a summer camp with a twist--the gob-smacking revelation of the murderer's identity.
SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2
Angela's back in this sequel to the 1983 cult favourite. It's five years later and the grisly murders that terrorised Camp Arawak have become the favourite ghost story around Camp Rolling Hills. Unfortunately for these campers, Angela (Pamela Springsteen, sister of Bruce), is now a counsellor at Camp Rolling Hills who is eager to mortally reprimand any of the naughty young campers who break her rules. Full of gratuitous nudity, bad haircuts, and even worse dialogue, SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2 is an entertaining sequel, though it is much different than the creepy original.
SLEEPAWAY CAMP 3
Angela returns once again in this third installment of the popular SLEEPAWAY CAMP series. Here, Angela joins Camp New Horizon, an organization that brings rich and poor teenagers together for a weekend of sharing, after she kills her lookalike, and takes her place. It isn't long before the other campers begin ridiculing Angela and history begins to repeat itself. Just as entertaining as the second film in the series, TEENAGE WASTELAND follows the lead of its predecessor and places the emphasis on campy fun, gore, and gratuitous nudity rather than the creepy atmosphere of the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 5 Feb 2008
By David Rush "Fasten your seatbelts, its going ... (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The Sleepaway Camp trilogy is one of the most overlooked horror franchises in the history of cinema. The first film stars Felissa Rose as a troubled young girl with a mysterious past named Angela Baker, who arrives at summer camp with her cousin. However, things strange things begin to happen at camp and it becomes clear that Angela could be responsible. The truly shocking ending will have you gawping for hours afterwards. The second and third installments in the trilogy are much more tongue-in-cheek and star Pamela Springsteen - you guessed it, Bruce's sister - as the older Angela, freshly released from the mental hosptial where she has been incarcerated for years. Soon Angela is up to her old tricks again, this time directing her anger towards teenagers that she thinks deserve to be "punished". Springsteen plays the role for laughs and the effects are tremendous. A must have for any horror fan, this boxset from Anchor Bay is well worth the money and extremely entertaining!

4.0 out of 5 stars People that like this movie are a special breed, 26 Oct 2007

This review is from: Sleepaway Camp [1983] [DVD] (DVD)
This main reason this movie was remembered was because of the ending. The director really did succeed at making a movie that would make jaws drop in the theater, and keep people thinking about it when they leave.

I made the mistake of seeing this movie when I was 10 years old. You can live through seeing a movie like this when you're older, but I was afraid I would be scarred for life. I was enjoying the movie when I was watching it, until I saw the ending, and my stomach churned. This movie has many creative but grisly death scenes (I shrieked when I saw the horrifying bee death). This movie had a lot of points that kept you awake and drawn to it, which is good. It is a mystery to find out who the killer is, so that keeps you going. Sleepaway Camp is not a slow movie. There were a lot of things about the movie I was way too young to see. There was a lot of homosexual references, but I guess I know now that was foreshadowing the climax of the movie. This movie is still good despite the shocker ending. Many people push this movie aside because of the ending... they think the guy who made this movie was definitely sick. But the movie was still good, just very different and awfully disturbing. I don't think you'll be scarred for life by seeing this movie, but see it with another person. Believe me, you might feel uncomfortable if you don't have someone by your side once it ends.

Unless you have a strong lining in your stomach, there are some things in this movie that you can't unsee. They get in your head and stay there. I think some versions of Sleepaway Camp are cut, but the original release was uncut. A lot of the death scenes look very realistic (maybe that's just me), and they're unlike any you've ever seen before. This movie is shocking, disturbing (kinda perverse), full of horror, and definitely not for the squeamish.

Good acting that fits this genre, lots of violence, a "different" kind of plot, plenty of profanity, and definitely memorable. Just remember this is unlike any of those countless horror flicks. I recommend this to be watch with a group of people. Separate and think about what themes were presented in the movie (you could even write a 'response' paragraph). Regroup and discuss.

Or you could just watch the movie and go to bed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitley Worth A Watch, 8 Jul 2004
This is an average slasher movie right up until the end of the movie due to a cracking twist. Everything you've seen before fades away and you feel like you just watched a classic, because you had no idea 'that' would happen. Very original. I do highly recommend this film not just to horror movie fans.

The DVD comes with a couple of good extras including a commentary. Just don't buy the sequels they are absolute rubbish. Also, and this is VERY important, don't read the back of the case before you watch the film it gives away the ending and will ruin your enjoyment.
