This collection of tunes is an accompaniment to Dennis Brown's 'Deep Down' album originally released in 1976. In basic terms it is the same songs (minus one or two) stripped bare of the singers voice and all the other instruments are moved around according to the engineers choice, adding echo, delay, reverb and more to give the songs a different feel.In this case the engineer is King Tubby - one of the originators of the remix.
So in modern terms it is a remix album, remixed at the time of the original release. The musical collective Massive Attack did a similar thing in 1994 with their second album 'Protection' handing the songs to The Mad Professor who echoed up the songs to make 'No Protection.'
All the songs are played by The Soul Syndicate band who were a regular feature of Niney The Observers output and capable of extremely tight/strong rhythms.
This reissue on Motion Records includes an interview with Niney The Observer by David Katz.
There were only approx 400 copies of 'Sledgehammer Dub' originally pressed, this reissue adds four bonus tracks that complement the original in that they were originally recorded by the same musical team and at a very similar time.
The mastering is faultless.
A lot of care in this Motion Records reissue of an original Roots Reggae Dub classic.

* This album is available as part of the 'Evolution Of Dub' series of Box Set CD collections on Greensleeves Records in Vol. 2 - The Great Leap Forward, without the four extra tracks.

What Dub Should Be 22 Oct 2012
By Kenneth M. Goodman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Lovers of 1970's rootsy Jamaican DUB should go out of their way to get Sledgehammer Dub, as much a Niney the Observer as a King Tubby work. It's heavy as can be, yet playful & mysterious too; and (a blessed, welcome rarity in dub) the original album is entirely free from annoying vocals! Thank God! It definitely has that classic deep King Tubby sound, thus "sledgehammer..." but this hammer is lined with smokey velvet. Never monotonous, spiritual and fun, it's as fine as any classic dub you've ever heard. It's mind-boggling, to me, that 3 of the 4 "bonus tracks" at the end DO have some vocals...however, they are such stellar tracks...all is forgiven. When you listen to this CD, you may notice JAH listening through you, so pay attention to the listener!
