Review

"A witty satire on the world of celebrity... Sleb is terribly clever... Andrew Holmes, like the departed Felix Carter, could be far more than a one-hit wonder... Deliciously sharp celebrity satire. Heat readers will love it" (Heat 20020701)

“[Sleb] is not only a brilliant satire on the shallow times we live in, but also a moving portrait of the disintegration of one man’s life” (Hello! 20020701)

"It is safe to say that this will be one of the most enjoyable debuts of 2002" - Barry Forshaw, Publishing News

“A great read” (Glamour )

'Ingenious twist... Holmes has a great line in drunken, rage-filled monologues which collapse into pathos.' (Literary Review )

“A fascinating insight into the nature of celebrity and obsession" (Red magazine )

“Holmes is a very funny storyteller... Sleb is an enjoyable and well-executed novel” (The Times )

“A funny and enjoyable book... Holmes’s caustic perspective manages to hit the mark.” (Express on Sunday )

“A tragic, funny, touching and often terrifying account of a descent into alcoholism... [Sleb] succeeds through brilliant characterisation and a cunningly devised plot. A talent to watch.” (Big Issue in the North )

Literary Review

'Ingenious twist... Holmes has a great line in drunken, rage-filled monologues which collapse into pathos.'

Chris. Just a normal man with a normal life who has a normal job who has a normal wife and a normal pet cat and a man who likes the normnal drink now and then. This amusing story charts Chris's demise into alchoholism, without him realising or accepting it of course, as his life goes from bad to worse. Then even worse. Andrew Holmes manages to bring all the characters to life with some excellent and, at times very very funny writing. We sympathise with Christopher sewell, at the same time thanking god that it could never happen to us. could it?
This is a brilliant and light hearted look at alcoholism and our fascination with celebrities, and our underlieing desire to be like them. Cant wait for Holmes next novel if it is anywhere near as fantastic as this one.

I loved "Sleb", think I was drawn to it in W H Smith's because of the striking cover, but thought it looked worth a read. How glad I was to have made that decision. It is sparklingly funny in parts, but has a very serious side - the dangers of drink etc.

I think it is one of the most compelling portraits of a descent into alcaholism that I have ever read - the self justifying, the lying etc.

Above all it is entertainment - I have leant my copy now, and it is one of those books that I think I may never see again, as it will be surely always out on loan - have commanded all my friends to read it.

Please, Andrew Holmes, more more........

I picked up this book cheap in a book sale. The back cover made the book sound like it could be entertaining...

Well I must say it didn't let me down. The storyline was funny, but with a sinister level involved. In fact there were numerous occasions in the book that had me laughing out loud.

Overall, an excellent book, well worth reading if you like books that make you laugh.

Not bad, but
This could have been a fun and topical satire on our celebrity obsessed culture. It's a well drawn and convincing portrayal of a man's descent into alcoholism and his denial about... Read more

Sleb was excellent! Holmes makes it surprisingly easy to relate to a heavy drinker whose wife has left him. Read more

Good, but not THAT good!
This was an enjoyable read, but a little predictable and not as good as the other reviews are making it out to be. An ideal book to read on a bus or train, but very lightweight.

Andrew Holmes writes with confidence and style. His subtle, and not so subtle, inclusion of contemporary culture really bring the novel and it's subject matter to life. Read more
