Product Description

The hero of this explosive tale is David Cleveland, investigator for the Jockey Club, who goes to Norway in response to an appeal from Oslo racecourse. A British jockey, riding there, has disappeared, and with him has gone a day's takings from the turnstiles. The Norwegian police have found no trace of him, and the case is being filed as just one more unsolved theft. David Cleveland is a last resort. He goes without much expectation - and finds himself in waters as dark and deep as the fjords.

Book Description

David Cleveland is looking forward to Norway. A change of scenery, an old friend and a straight-forward looking case. An English jockey has gone missing; and so have the racecourse takings. It all looks so simple until a dead body turns up ... unannounced. The Racecourse Committee fields questions like some Norwegian Politburo and the only answers Cleveland gets are violent ones ... from a gang of professional killers. So, with maverick Marxist Erik Lund playing minder, he constructs a trap for his would-be assailants ... with himself as bait.

Format:Paperback
Synopsis: Dick Francis' 12th racing thriller plays mostly in Norway. David Cleveland, Jockey Club investigator, has come over to find an English jockey who has disappeared with a day's racing entry fees. But he finds more than a jockey - he finds serious trouble, with several attempts being made on his life. People are not what they seem to be, and the motives are very confusing...

Strange that this book is 36 years old - it still reads fresh. Most of it is a corker, too, with crisp clear writing, tension, thrills, humour, good dialogue and small tidy packages of quick-draw perfectly formed personalities. Four-and-a-half stars, as the ending, I feel is not quite up to the rest of the story.
Yes, this is a thriller/detective story set in the horse-racing world, but it is also a very intelligent book, and *very* well-written. I am not into horse racing, really, but Dick Francis can make me care deeply about most things - he is a fantastic writer.
