Product Description

Product Description
This work enquires into the social and mental world of 18th-century Bristolians. It asks such questions as: how did the city's merchants interact with the forces behind British colonization?; and what was the relationship between trade in slaves and trade in slave-produced commodities?

5.0 out of 5 stars Slavery Illuminated, 10 Mar 2002
By A Customer
A fascinating and illuminating read. Don't be misled by the subtitle - this is much more than the history of slavery in one English provincial city. Madge Dresser is clearly aware of the larger (and more ponderous) books that attempt to tell the whole history of slavery but by focussing on Bristol she is able to tell the story in microcosm, with an abundance of instances that reveal the wider picture - the black maid respected by her fellow Baptists in the seventeenth century, the Calabar Princes who had to be released from slavery in the port a century later.
The author vividly demonstrates the way in which "when slavery is obscured, the relationship between exploitation and gentility is inadvertently airbrushed out of the historical picture", making clear the way in which the groundwork was laid for Britain's racial view of the world.
