Product Description

Product Description

Reporting from the Bosnian war zone, American author David Rieff indicts the West and the UN for standing by at the annihilation. Travelling extensively in Bosnia for more than two years, he made his way from Sarajevo to the other besieged cities and villages, and like the European Bosnians he could not believe, at first, what he was witnessing - a genocidal war. In this book he dissects the failures of the UN and the West as he talks with the officials and the people at the heart of the tragedy. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Well written and very inciteful. The more you read the angrier you will become. Human life counted for nothing they all (except NGOs) cared about the images they wish to show the world. My teacher at school once said 'some people are like graves beautiful marble on the outside but rotting and smelly inside'. This was the picture being shown to the world. A must read if you want to know what happened to those thousands of lives.

This is a justifiably angry book, which confronts all of us in Europe with the ultimate shame: we stood aside whilst fellow Europeans were slaughtered as part of an ethnically driven programme of genocide - and we did NOTHING to stop it. Read it and then explain to me why, when people were dying in England protesting about the export of calves, there were no meaningful attempts to stop the slaughter in Bosnia, and the dismemberment of an independent, multi cultural state. Has history taught us nothing? We should have bombed the Serbs then, and saved the world a lot of anguish (and a few thousand lives into the bargain). A great book, which shames us all.

This book present the western world's condescending view of Bosnia and in the process demeans those that I know who have died there. Rieff does not seem to understant that the tragedy of Bosnia is not about whether the big governments could have done something to prevent war, it is about the loss of human dignity in the face of ideological conflicts. It is a universal tale, not a simple Sunday school sermon. Rieff should have spent some time learning the language and truly understanding the people instead of just what his interviewees want him and the West to hear.
