5.0 out of 5 stars This book consumed me 14 Sep 2013
By Rebecca
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
'Does he treat you with respect at all times? That's the first question. The second question is, if he is the exact same person twenty years from now that he is today, would you still want to marry him? And finally, does he inspire you to want to be a better person? You find someone you can answer yes about to all three, then you've got yourself a good man.'

---My thoughts---

Well, she's done it again. Colleen Hoover has written another book that has consumed me from the very beginning. I don't know how she does it, but her books always deprive me of sleep. The first night I decided to read a 'chapter' of this book, I ended up reading four chapters, and going to bed at 1:30am. There was just no way I could put it down once I'd met Layken and Will.

The story starts with Layken about to leave her home. This is an emotional time for her, walking through the empty rooms that she once shared with her father. I got a good insight into Layken at this point; I saw that losing her dad was devastating, but she really had to pull herself together to stop her mother and brother from falling apart. Layken takes on the responsibility of helping take care of her younger brother, while her mother looks for work.

Moving to Michigan from Texas was hard for Layken. She hated the idea of leaving behind the home she shared with her father, and the town where she grew up. She's all set to hate Michigan; but then she meets Will, and things start to look up.

I really felt sorry for Layken when certain events prevented her and Will from being together. The only thing that was making her happy is suddenly snatched away from her, and now she's faced with living in close proximity to Will, knowing that they can't be together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Poetry 12 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had never heard of Slammed until someone on Facebook mentioned it. Intrigued by the title I headed over to GR to look at some reviews and was blown away by the comments and high average rating for a book that only so few have heard of. Well... I saw that Slammed's obscurity hasn't lasted long and it's taking off in the bestseller's lists and I'm not surprised. I predict that if the book ever falls under Hollywood's radar that it won't be long before author Colleen Hoover will hear a knock at the door for film option.

I opened my kindle to have a squint at Slammed before I went to bed and ended up staying up to 3am to finish it.

Told from the first person narrative of mc Lake, the reader is immediately pulled into her earthen, real and sad story as she moves from Texas to Michigan following the unexpected death of her father. On the first day she meets neighbor Will, and Hoover does a truly magical job (perhaps one of the best I've ever read) of creating an authentic and instant connection between the two. A few days after meeting, everything falls apart for Lake, and we travel through her story feeling every emotion, every shock and every epiphany. Slammed is a beautifully told story, enhanced by the insertion of some truly moving Slam poetry. It's funny because a friend of mine had only just introduced me to some powerful Slam poetry on Youtube a few weeks before reading this. I'm definitely sending Slammed her way.

What more can I really say without giving away plot points that really need to be discovered by the reader. All I can say is that this isn't oversentimental or cheesy. It's real and moving ...

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!! 9 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was PERFECT. I can not not think of one single negative to say about this book, for the first time ever. It was beautiful, everything about it was beautiful. I fell in love with every character, because they were all so real. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever lost someone, to anyone who has every had to put responsibility ahead of desire, to anyone who has ever had to move, to anyone who has ever made needed a real best friend, to anyone who has ever fell in love, or had their heart broken, and to anyone who has a family. Pretty much what I'm trying to say is I would recommend this book to EVERYONE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Kicks 14 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought the Kindle version of this on the strength of all the 5 star reviews, but without actually reading any of them, and therefore not realising that this is really aimed at teenagers. Having said that, and in that context, I enjoyed it. It's emotionally manipulative and unashamedly sentimental but I think that's fine for teen fiction. The book deals with death and bereavement, and may just get a few more people excited by poetry, so I'll certainly be recommending this to my own teenage daughter.
