Product Description

When Slade embarked upon their one and only movie in 1974, fans and critics alike were expecting something akin to a Glam rock update of The Beatles A Hard Days Night , released a decade earlier. After all, in the dark days of a Britain beset by strikes, power cuts and a collective musical identity crisis, Slade were the ultimate good time band: irreverent, loud and armed with a terrific set of singalong stompers. However, expectations were confounded upon release of the film. Gritty realism, exposing the reality of band life in the late Sixties, was the order of the day and Slade In Flame is all the better for it. Over 30 years later, it is universally lauded as one of the finest rock/pop movies ever made.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Booklet, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Collectors Edition, Documentary, Featurette, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Remastered, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: British glam rock superstars Slade made their collective acting debut in this downbeat drama about a pop group's struggles with success. In the late '60s, Barry (Dave Hill), Paul (Jim Lea), and Charlie (Don Powell) are musicians who are barely making a living playing pub dates, weddings, and socials backing up egocentric vocalist Jack Daniels (Alan Lake). One night, the boys find themselves opening for a ghoulish show band called The Undertakers, and a prank played on their lead vocalist, Stoker (Noddy Holder), backfires and leads to a car chase which lands both groups in jail for the night. After a long night of thinking, Barry, Paul, and Charlie decide that they have no future with Daniels, and bring new pal Stoker aboard as their singer. Calling themselves Iron Rod, the new quartet clicks musically, but manager Ron Harding (Johnny Shannon) doesn't care for their new style and stops booking the group. Robert Seymour (Tom Conti), a marketing man from a wealthy family who thinks there's quick money in pop music, enters the picture and informs the band that he can make them major stars. Wary of Seymour but eager for success, the group signs a new management deal, and after Seymour changes their name to Flame and gives them an image makeover, the band scores a hit record and is soon playing a series of sold-out shows. But as fame beckons, tensions rise between the musicians and is not at all helped when Harding reenters the picture. Slade members Jim Lea and Noddy Holder wrote a set of original songs for the film, two of which ('Far Far Away' and 'How Does It Feel') became hit singles in the U.K. ...Flame ( Slade in Flame )

Slade In Flame 20 May 2005

Format:DVD
Everyone expected them to make a sort of glam version of 'Hard day's night' when we heard they were making a film. No-one expected a dark and grittily violent story, about a struggling pub band who gave up their day jobs when they got discovered... that's riddled with contarct thefts, threats and intimidation and a real downer of an ending.

There is some humour in the film, Jim chatting Nod up to join their band early on, while in the gents is a killer, plus a silly car showroom scene when Barry (Dave Hill) buys a Rolls Royce. Don Powell is unintentionally hilarious throughout and his aiudition and the 'on the train scene' are classic. So is the bit where he walks by the canal with his old boss from the foundry where he was a sheet metal worker, discussing what floats in the canal!!

The music is exactly what you would hope for from Slade - great stuff. Most people will know their two big hits from the soundtrack: Far far away and How does it feel. There sin't a duff song in the film.

The film sadly didn't do Slade much good in the long run. On their concert tour to promote the album, they were forever telling their audiences that they weren't splitting up and that Nod and Jim didn't hate each other. Flame were THAT fractured in the film.

Slade toured the UK then decided to take themselves off to America and to all intents and purposes, for the 12-18 months that they were away, as far as the UK was concerned, they might as well have spilt up.

The film is one of the very few made by a group that deals with this kind of subject matter well.

Tom Conti made one of his earliest appearances in this film and stumbles vaguely through his lines, playing himself.

Format:VHS Tape
This 1974 feature starring UK rock group Slade, finds the lads portraying fictitious late 60's group Flame. Although critically aclaimed upon its' release, Flame was only a moderate success during its' UK season. Time however has proven that Flame, (originally titled Slade In Flame) was indeed ahead of its'time, as ironically was Slade themselves, particularly in America. Many were surprised at the realistic, and in Noddy Holder's case, charasmatic performances of the band members - none of whom had had previous acting experience. Also the film is rated highly for it's realistic portrayal of the music business as things were during this time. If not wholly appreciated upon its' release, many music fans and critics alike now accept that Flame is indeed not only a fine film, but stands head and shoulders above many pretenders aspiring to a similar theme. Flame also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including notable performances from a young Tom Conti, Alan Lake, and Johnny Shannon.

Slade are simply awesome in this underrated rock classic. It's a crying shame that the acting careers of Noddy Holder and Dave Hill were just limited to this one classic movie. It surely touches the hearts of anyone who loves glam rock, who lived through the seventies or who has visited wolverhampton. What more can I say but buy it now!
