Before reading any further, if you are trying to decide between the "starter pack" or the "booster pack" take one major thing in consideration!

** The new Portal of Power which comes with the Skylanders Giant's start pack is a USB CONNECTED and DOES NOT require batteries at all and DOES work with the first game too - making it a massive reason to upgrade!!! **

I absolutely loved the first game and only stopped playing for ONE simple reason - the batteries kept running out and they have finally fixed this ONE negative aspect of the game.

So even if you already own a portal of power from the first game, it is actually good value for money to buy the new starter pack again for Giants because 1) You get 3 new characters 2) You get a portal of power which is USB powered and 3) its actually the same price as the booster pack anyway on Amazon at least.

Why they didn't do this in the first place is beyond me?

Anyway the game itself...

The game works and feels almost exactly like the last one except the odd change and mostly improvements.
If you loved the first one like I did, you will love this one even more.

- The story is slightly shorter but its still lengthy story campaign.
- A new max level of 15 with old and new characters.
- More abilities to unlock for old characters.
- The ability to choose the difficulty including easy, normal, hard and NIGHTMARE once you complete the game once.
- Slightly crisper and nicer graphics.
- The in-game movies have been improved a lot visually, but still the lip-syncing is a completely off.
- They have removed the shaking of the stick to open boxes and now its just bashing the 'A' button instead.

As a busy adult who works a lot sometimes you don't get to pay games as often as you want to and sometimes you just need something you can pay for distraction for an hour our so, put down and come back some other time and continue. Skylanders is just like this.
The game and whole concept itself is the comeback of Spyro the Dragon (one of my favourite games on the PSX). But it's also really clever from a marketing point of view and from a technological point of view. It's really clever.
The game is good - it takes place where skylanders: spyros adventure left off and is really more of the same. It introduces the giants characters - who light up when you put them on the portal of power and look impressive when stood next to their normal sized counterparts. As I already had the portal of power - I didn't need to get all the kit - so this is basically the game and the exclusive giant who is from the life element.
There are 8 giants to collect - all representative of each element. There are also some new characters and light core models which basically light up - which are, of course, available separately.
There are two styles of achievement in the game - ones actually in game and then the console specific ones. Some link and some are independent. There are some parts of the game that can only be accesses by giants so although you can use existing figures having a giant is going to be beneficial.
Most of the characters from the first ame are compatible and they can now be upgraded to level 15 and all of their skills and stuff are intact. However there are Series 2 models in new poses that have oranges bases which can go up to level 15 and have extra skills that can be unlocked.

It may be that the the whole point of this game is collecting figurines and cards and that the PS3 game is just an additional 'nice to have'. If this is your take on it then stop reading this review.

My kids approached the purchase from the game angle as they were introduced to it by one of their friends. The game itself is fine but, in order to be able to progress, you need to keep buying the figurines (there are about 45 of them) at around a tenner each. These figurines have to be placed on a small podium which is connected to the PS3 via a USB cable and then kids can play the game in the role of that particular character. If your kids are mainly into collecting the figures then this is great but having to spend some 450 quid on getting maximum value from a kids video game seems like very cynical marketing to me.

Perhaps I'm doing the whole package an injustice but my youngest son was hacked off with it after a week when he realised that to enjoy it he was going to have to continue paying for the privilege of using it. Disappointing all round.

Brings back memories from the first Spyro game. Great 3d platformer and i had so much fun with it.

As others might have mentioned beware that this item is just the game and the giant figure, there is NO portal. For that you would need the starter pack edition. Didn't bother me because we already have the swap force pack and is backwards compatible.

- Great for your kid, or the inner kid inside you.
- So many characters to pick from, and i like that you upgrade them.
- Supports multiplayer which is a must for these games

- As in swap force to me the game looks blurry and gives me the impression that is upscaled to HD ready resolution from something lower and this is why it lost a star. A kid though wouldn't notice and would have so much fun.
- Too expensive additional characters. You used to unlock characters in games, now you have to buy them. In some cases you have to have a character of a specific element to do some extra quests.

Have fun!
