Biography

Skye, the sublime lead singer of Morcheeba, returns with a stunning solo album 'Back To Now'. Undoubtedly her most provocative release to date, we hear a much bolder, buoyant sound with sonic layering, driving beats and the quirky voices of old synthesisers that somehow give it a futuristic feel.

With Morcheeba, Skye sold over 6 million albums and after a 7 year break in 2003, she returned to the band and they completed a successful 18 month tour around Europe, America, Canada & South America. Skye then started to write for her third solo album with long time collaborator and husband Steve Gordon. "The tracks began at the first stage, on my lap top" Say's Skye "We took a different approach when it came to the song writing and started with beats and loops instead of a guitar or piano.

This pivotal work fine tunes the music that we heard before on Skye's 2006 debut 'Mind How You Go' and her 2nd solo album 'Keeping Secrets', released in 2009. 'Back To Now' signals a new direction, with ingenious tracks that feel just as comfortable on the dance floor as they would on a car journey to the beach.

The songs are crisp and masterful with strong hooks and hypnotic emotion-loaded melodies. We hear that on tracks like 'Nowhere' and 'Featherlight' that strike the right balance of sumptuous ambience and pulsating force, while the brooding Dissolve and We Fall Down evoke a simple template of 'cool'.

The impressive production is handled by Stephen Fitzmaurice. Formerly under the wing of Trevor Horn, Fitzmaurice a Grammy Award winning mixer and producer has credits to his name that include Depeche Mode, Seal, U2 and Aloe Blacc. Says Skye "I wanted to work with one producer for the whole record, so when all the songs were written I took them to Stephen. I'd worked with him before when he mixed my single for 'Love Show' and knew he'd be able to take these new songs to the next level".

Skye's voice, ever mesmerising, is easy to fall in love with. It has an unmatched smoothness and charisma and on this, her third album, her vocals beckon over retro-futurist rhythms. Centred around feel-good vibes, 'Back To Now' is a consistent set of songs that deepen with every listen. With it's flawless arrangements that lend gravitas, you can't help but be drawn in to the neon soundscapes that Skye has created.
