Product Description

Review

Here's a rare thing, a novel, and a first novel too, that opens your eyes, touches your heart, and is so engaging it almost turns the pages for you. (Michael Morpurgo )

An edge-of-your-seat wildlife adventure that tells a very human story of friendship, discovery and an incredible journey. I loved it! (Kate Humble )

This beautifully written, captivating book should be on everyone's bookcase and in every library. It is for us all - young, old and in between. For it is about us all, our human nature, about nature itself, and how we relate to the wild creatures who face survival challenges we understand so little about. The skill with which Gill Lewis tells the haunting story of 'Sky Hawk' through the eyes and feelings of the children and her delicate, yet vivid, description of the wild Scottish landscape is breathtaking. Poignant. Unforgettable. (Virginia McKenna )

Sky Hawk is a stunning debut novel. Set in the Highlands of Scotland, it is a poignant story of friendship and how communities strive to protect and understand the wildlife within them. The pace is fast, the characters are real and the tightly-crafted plot takes many twists and turns that keep the reader turning pages to find out what happens next.

This book has been described as a modern classic and I understand why: the central wildlife story is timeless but has been updated and captured on Google Earth; the writing is concise and unsentimental yet addresses poignant themes of loss and adversity and triumph; and the friendships between the children are forged, tested and span all the way across the globe.

There are many scenes and moments that are still vivid in my mind, although I read it all-in-one-gulp a while ago. Gill Lewis is a skilled story-teller.

Callum and Iona are sharing a secret, a lovely secret hidden deep in the forest on Callum's farm, where Callum and Iona can look at it every day. Even though this leads to a great friendship, Callum forgets for a while that he has other friends too. After a tragic event, Callum and someone else continue to look after the secret. Reconciliation brings all the friends together again.

I was so into this book that it was like being part of the story, I just slipped into it. And when something really awful happened it was as if this thing happened to my own best friend. When people felt happy, sad or hopeful I felt it too.

At first, I felt a bit frustrated because the characters' appearance isn't really described, but then I started to imagine them for myself and I thought it was much better to do that. I learned a lot from 'Sky Hawk' about wildlife and a bit about Scotland and even other places far away.

I think Sky Hawk would make a great film and there should definitely be a volume 2 because when I finished it I really wanted to continue this wonderful adventure.

It was the best book I have ever read, I couldn't stop reading it. It contains lots of secrets that you can't wait to uncover! I would recommend this book to anyone (girls and boys) between 8 and 12 years old. It's the BEST!

'Sky Hawk' is an excellent book. It has great description and is plotted out so carefully. It has sad bits, but in the end it's better. An overall excellent book. I loved it!!!!!!!!!
