Skullcandy--Hesh 2.0 Headphones

Skullcandy’s Hesh 2.0 headphones with finely-tuned Supreme Sound offer a streamlined design for powerful acoustics and lasting comfort. Skullcandy’s Hesh 2.0 headphones come in a variety of colour combinations. Leather touch ear pillows and strong, sturdy construction make for a robust finish. They are adjustable for head size and come with a satin travel bag for safe, stylish storage.

Hesh 2.0 headphones are lightweight and fit snug without crushing your ears. They pick up tiny sounds that can be missed with in-ear headphones. The cable is not fixed to the ear piece so any standard 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm jack will be compatible.

Every Skullcandy Hesh 2.0 component is carefully created and tested by using a design language that is the first step in engineering performance products. Skullcandy do this by employing a full suite of engineering tools to test product fit and performance.

Hesh 2.0 Technical Specifications

Skullcandy Hesh 2.0 headphones combine a 3.5 mm connection, stereo, over-ear model and design with a frequency of 20 Hz-20 kHz through a speaker diameter of 50 mm for a comfortable fit and awesome sound. The cable length is 1.2 metres and removable.

About Skullcandy

Skullcandy became the world's most distinct audio brand by bringing colour, character and performance to an otherwise monochromatic space; revolutionising the audio arena by introducing headphones, earbuds and other audio and wireless lifestyle products that possess unmistakable style and exceptional performance. From the award-winning, optic-inspired Roc Nation Hesh 2.0 headphones to the evolutionary fitting FIX earbuds and a roster of the world's finest athletes, musicians and artists, Skullcandy continues to redefine world-class audio performance and style.

Skullcandy is committed to innovative designs, ensuring your favourite headphones perform according to your needs. The ergonomics of Skullcandy product features are engineered to perfectly fit the anatomy of your head and ear. Skullcandy’s unique design solutions conquer industry and user problems. Skullcandy has developed a number of headphone collections to enhance end-user style and keep you true to your core.

Supreme Sound Tuning

Skullcandy is committed to delivering true, premium audio and their new Supreme Sound tuning gives your favourite music the full range of attacking bass, natural vocals and precision highs. Created by a team of the world's leading acoustic engineers, Supreme Sound is the exclusive audio experience only Skullcandy can deliver. It is engineered to the consumer’s playlist to deliver the best possible tonal balance of bass, vocals and highs.

Bass, Vocals & Highs

These three audio components encompass the entire audio spectrum and are the foundation of the Supreme Sound Experience. Through Supreme Sound, Skullcandy has defined the way bass, vocals and highs should sound in all of their products. Consumer headphones often deliver suppressed ‘muddy’ bass or exaggerated ‘boomy’ bass. ‘Attacking Bass’ packs a sound that is punchy and powerful.

Natural Vocals

Conventional headphones can sound tinny and hollow like they are being pushed through an AM radio. Supreme Sound creates a warm and smooth listening experience so you can hear every inflection in your favourite songwriter’s lyrics, as if you were standing beside them.

Precision Highs

Typical headphones in the market create a harsh or dull sound that can be fatiguing to the ears, however, Skullcandy engineer their headphones to produce clean and spacious highs, not piercing or muted highs like you may have heard in other headphones. Supreme Sound delivers perfect highs for the final element of an amazing audio experience.

This is becoming somewhat of a tradition, as this time last year I bought the original Skullcandy Hesh (1.0, you could say), also at the marked down £29.99 price. I was satisfied with those, but replacements were a must, as the headband broke some time in August. I recently unboxed the 2.0 and these are the main points, in comparison with my first pair:

-Much, much better looking. I got a red/black/denim design that might only be available instore, and they're easily the best looking headphones I have ever owned. If that sort of thing is important for you.

-The headband extension is narrower and thicker than its predecessor's - good for me considering how the previous pair broke.

-The cups fit comfortably around the ear. If I'm splitting hairs I might just prefer the original material for the ear cups, but both pairs are very comfortable so there's no issue.

-All of the intricacies and subtleties of the sound are captured.

But the one glaring con for me,

-This set is much, much quieter than its predecessor! A shame that they'd fall back in such a silly way considering all the steps they've taken to improve it. I find myself turning my iPod volume up to maximum with these headphones, and sometimes still wanting a volume boost, even though I've never done this with any headphones I've used with it before (whether that's in or over ear.) Sound that should come as resounding, booming thuds (as they did in the Hesh 1.0) are instead reduced to sometimes pathetic puttering noises. Volume up, please!

So all in all they're a pretty standard set of headphones, and quite good value for £30 which is why this review is favourable. I don't think I'd have been happy if I had paid more.

Pros:
- LOTS of bass.
- LOTS more bass.
- Pleasant listening even at high volumes.
- Very good sound insulation. I couldn't hear much of what's going on outside. And, even with the volume cranked up to headache levels, nobody can hear even the slightest "tssht" coming from the inside. Nothing gets in, nothing gets out.
- The detachable cable makes these almost breakproof, since a common failure point is the cable. If the cable wears, you can just buy another from any electronics store. A great idea, I'd like to see implemented more often with headphones.
- Feel well built. Although plastic construction, it feels to be quality and weighty plastic. Not in the least bit flimsy.
- Inner ear cushions rotate to find a good spot for your ears. I've had headphones that don't do this and they are not comfortable, so it's important.
- If you're after perfectly insulated insanely bassy headphones then for this price you won't do better.

Cons:
- Where's the treble? Mid and bass heavy, missing a lot of clarity from the treble.
- A vented design I'm sure would have given a more faithful sound reproduction (albeit at the cost of sharing your music with your fellow passengers)
- Tight fitting, can cause discomfort with long term wear (a price you pay for the sound insulation "pro" above).
- Headphone cable I found quite short - thankfully you can replace it with a longer one (see above) but I feel that for the price point, they could include two cables, one short one for your mp3 player and one longer one for your TV or hi-fi.
- If you're after "audiophile" headphones then for this price you can do better.
- DONT voluntarily squeeze them against your head as I've seen people talk about in other reviews.

I bought these to replace my 10+ years old Sony MDR- XD200 that I got for £20. They've been good headphones but starting to break a little and I thought I'll get a new pair, fixing some of my issues with my old Sonys.

First off my old sonys had a 2m cable which was great for gaming and TV etc but was a pain when going out and about. Also they sounded great but we're very very plastic and creaked a lot. And while they were OK comfort wise the ear cushions were flaking and the top band support was breaking, making them less comfortable. Also the sonys looked a bit ridiculous on, very big and sticked out a lot so I tended to not use them outside.

Enter the skullcandy hesh 2's. The design and build quality was much nicer. No creaking and comfortable. I went for a more subdued colouration that included a more cushioned headband. The cable is removable so I could have a 1.2m one for out and about and a longer one for gaming and TV at night. Also cables have been the weak point for many headphones so I thought this feature would increase the life of the headphones. So far so good.

But when I started to listen to music I was disappointed. Bass was OK (I do like a bit of bass) but the rest of the sound wasn't that impressive. I messed around with an equaliser and managed to make it sound better but the mids were still not as clear as I'd liked. But I put this down to being different to my old headphones and might take a little time to adjust. But then I tried it for gaming and movies and was very disappointed. It all just sounded completely uninspiring and distracted me from the film, gaming. Some bits were too loud while some bits too quiet. And no amount of equaliser fiddling could remedy this for me.
