Product Description

This novel follows the 8 protagonists of series 3 and the forthcoming series 4 over the course of the college summer break.

Brand new storylines, that don't feature in the series, or the upcoming film.  Effy, Freddie, JJ, Cook, Naomi, Pandora, Thomas and Katie are all dealing with the aftermath of the events at the end of series 3. Effy has fled to Italy with her mum, where she tries to put her feelings for Freddie, and the guilt she feels for stealing him from Katie out of her mind. The perfect distraction come in the form of sophisticated older man, Aldo...

Naomi and Emily are struggling with spending time apart when Em goes to France with her parents and battles with her stubborn twin sister, Katie. Back in Bristol, Naomi pines for Emily while wondering about her future education, Thomas and Pandora are sweetly in love, and finding it difficult to consummate their feelings for each other. Freddy and Cook are engaged in a vigorous game of sexual one-upmanship with a frustrated JJ as referee...

By the end of the summer, the gang will have resolved some issues and brought up some more, but always in the raw, uncompromising, contradictory and authentic narrative style that makes the series so popular and compelling.

WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT. Language and sexual references are graphic.

For Skin fans 4 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I had finished reading this book today, it was a very quick read for me for two reasons. Firstly I am a big admirer of the series, but secondly it is a short book.

I was debating how to best review this book, should I compare it to books in general? Or should I compare it to the TV series? Since there are references in the book to characters who are given no introduction or indication as to who they are, prior knowledge is required to get to grips with the teenager's universe. So for the purposes of this review I assume that you are a fan of the series.

The most complimentary thing that can be said of the book is how extremely well the author has captured the characters considering she is not one of the writers on the TV counterpart. You get the potty mouthed Cook, the strong Naomi, the nerdy and insecure JJ, the Freddie with no 'va-va voom', the silly Pandora, an incredibly messed up Effy and also the well captured twins. Thomas' portrayal is ok, but by far the weakest. This is mainly down to the modest development of his character in season 3; there isn't much about him. However, basing the trailer for the upcoming 4th season I predict we will see more of him.

Despite the faithful portrayals of the characters the author throws in a few nice curve balls in the teenager's stories. One in particular was very unexpected.

The book is divided into 4 weeks and follows the gang through the month of August during their holiday break between terms at college. The chapters are bite size and keep switching between characters. What the book offers is a first person perspective that the TV series could not provide. Meaning that you can clearly understand the character's deeper feelings and perhaps it might change your perspective on some, and make you relate to others...I know it has done for me.

Although I am a fan of the Skins franchise and am but in my early 20s I do find the characters unbelievable. By this I don't mean poor writing, I mean their behaviour. Effy for example in this novel is out of control. I am a little worried that young people today are too easily brain washed by such trends and increasingly aspire to the likes of Paris Hilton etc.

To blame the creators of Skins for doing this is unfair as it is down to individual personality. For example I can distinguish between fiction and fact, and choose not to live my life like the Bristol teenagers. If more viewers could interpret the Skins' characters not as idols, but as warnings then perhaps some people would not criticise the franchise so much.

I like the fact that the franchise has expanded to book form as it not only offers more insight and understanding to the characters but could very well encourage more teenagers to start reading. The very modest price may also help this cause.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of the series and regardless of your reading level I think you will enjoy this book. Like I said, I read it very quickly due to its length and content, but praise should also be given to the story and very well captured characters. Thumbs up!

This was a good read, and I would recommend it for any skins fan!!

However it does not give much background or depth to the characters, therefore it may be very difficult for someone who has not watched skins to grasp.

I found the stories entertaining, and they supported each characters personality and previous actions in the series fully, typical bnehaviours and language of each character was used, therefore a familiarity was present.

Although entertaining, the mini stories for each character were often weak and quite bland with very little cohesion, as the chapters swapped and changed from character to character.

Overall, I would recommend this book, as I found it a very easy and enjoyable read, and it also calmed my eagerness to see the new series for a little while :P

Fantastic Novel 14 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
When I heard about the Skins novel I was at first hesitant. Capturing what made the series so popular was going to be a difficult task. I was pleasantly surprised at the fact that the author has successfully managed to capture the essence of the TV series and yet also breathe new life in to it by adding more depth to certain characters who had previously been touched up lightly, ending seeing them in a different light. An example of this is Katie. Throughout Series 3 you cannot help but detest her, yet in the novel, I actually took a liking to her because you finally caught a glimpse of the girl underneath the make-up.

The chapters reflect each character in mini-episodic pieces, which is fantastic. The only problem I did have was that some characters only had small parts. I think Pandora only had a few chapters dedicated to herself. Predominantly, the novel is about a) Effy, b) Emily and her relationship with Katie and Naomi. The storyline with Cook, JJ, and Freddie is minimal as well. It probably would have been better if the author had gone more in depth with these characters instead of spending the majority of the novel on Effy, who in the end came out a lot worse for it. I couldn't stand her character throughout the novel, and whilst some sort of resolution for her is finally reached, it was done by immature behaviour. Of course, immature behaviour is what Skins is! I just wish Effy would have been seen in a better light. I'm liking Katie more than Effy right about now.

Effy's relationship with Aldo parallels with her relationship with Freddie in ways, and forces her to open her eyes up to the fact that the love between Freddie and Cook was stronger than their love for her. That she should just leave them be friends. She doesn't know they are both still in love with her, and entering a shag-a-thon, which is touched upon briefly, resulting in a hilarious yet cliche resolution involving an almost threesome gone wrong. JJ is only good in this novel for helping other characters realise things about themselves. His character doesn't have too much development.

The character of Josh could have been used more effectively with Emily, instead they took her down a path with Ana, who didn't really add much to the novel except for some graphic sex. I'm happy to say that at least Pandora had some sort of character evolution when she stood up to her mother! And Thomas was your round-a-bout nice guy still.

It was a great novel from beginning to end. It captured the series perfectly and it will be interesting to see how it leads on in Series 4.
