Product Description

Product Description

What started off as a small collection of photographs 14 year old Gavin Watson took of his family and friends in Wycombe, middle England, has grown into one of the most important and influential photographic books of the last 20 years, Skins. Skins & Punks is a singular retrospective complete with commentaries and oral histories. The stories behind the images are shocking, hilarious, brutal and heartbreaking and truly get behind the truth of growing up in the working classes in the 1980s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Classic, 30 July 2010
This review is from: Skins & Punks: Lost Archives 1978-1985 (Hardcover)
Gritty yet soulful, Watson's photographs are haunting. His powerful portraits of local characters give the reader a rare insight into a fascinating subculture. The portraits show both the hard and the soft, the attitude and the vulnerability. I grew up in the town in the late seventies, so this book is a must, but any reader should easily relate to the poignant and skilfully composed imagery. Before Richard Billingham or Tom Hunter, Gavin Watson captured the beauty in the mundane and he did it consistently. In this book he demonstrates his natural understanding of light to create drama and mood; see for example 'Kelley, 1983' or 'The Railway Hut, 1980'. My personal favourites are 'Mark at UK Today, Kensington Market 1985' - the composition and the tension created is staggering. Also, I single out, I'll call it 'Graffiti Boy' on page 76, for it's sheer modernity. The gritty subject matter meets the photographer's sensitive interpretation, Watson is a master of visual story telling.

I expected more, that is the problem when you buy on line and can not browse first. It is a picture book of young skinheads, pre-pubescent, and does not conjure up the memories I was hoping to rekindle of a remarkable time from my late teens and early 20's. Very much a miss!
