BBC Review

In some ways, New Boyz go out of their way to offend. Because before two minutes of their debut has elapsed, they’ve woken up in bed with a “fat” girl, worried they (lawks!) “might have said I love you” and offered an explanation. They only did “it” and said “it” because they were drunk. “Baby, I’m hungover,” they wail. Keats they ain’t.

But in the grand scheme of morning-after pop confessionals, this sort of cheekiness isn’t rare, and there are worse offenders. New Boyz could be forgiven because they are so very, very young – they know not what they do. But mainly we excuse them because Skinny Jeanz and a Mic isn’t your average, shiny RnB release. It’s about ‘Jerk’, and ‘The Reject’ and purple hair. And you might need some context to see why those things might matter.

Jerk is something of a niche concern as far as hip hop trends go – though with all those zeds in the song titles, the noisy artwork and a preponderance of comedy facial expressions, it does seem primed for the box marked ‘novelty’. But like hyphy and crunk before it, it has a pedigree. One, the music: LA-born, stripped-down, party music – produced on cheap software at home by young people, for young people. And two, the dancing: loose-limbed, floor-dipping moves that look like a slightly dafter, slacker take on break-dancing. The signature move is a reverse Running Man called – you guessed it – The Reject.

But unlike pop pigeonholes before it, Jerk’s popularity hasn’t suffered from hip hop’s usual East Coast / West Coast rivalries. Teens nationwide have engaged with the genre. And the requisite dance battles, outré female rappers out-saucing the men, makeshift YouTube videos and sheer lack of bling make it fresh, attracting the likes of Diplo (on producing detail here). Track two You’re a Jerk was the first, bona fide US Jerk hit, with its tinny electro and shouty sparseness breaking through on local radio before storming the charts. But there’ll be more.

Taken as a whole, the willfully blasé delivery, preponderance of Auto-Tune and sheer mindlessness of the party ‘bangers’ on Skinny Jeanz and a Mic could mean New Boyz are at the more polished end of the spectrum; we might be missing some of Jerk’s defining, unvarnished charm. But overall their sheer chutzpah wins you over – and with its day-glo tongue wedged so very firmly in its cheek, Skinny Jeanz and a Mic is hard to resist. --Wendy Roby

CD Description

Though "You're a Jerk" is the first single from Skinny Jeanz & A Mic, their forthcoming album on Asylum Records, New Boyz is bigger than just one sound. Though Skinny Jeanz & A Mic features the sonic imprint of modern movements like hyphy and Atlanta's own teen rap madness, it's also heavily influenced by the minimal bass and drum machine sound from hip-hop's earliest days.

2.0 out of 5 stars I can just feel the "they got more money than you" comments coming..., 23 Dec 2009

When I first heard "You're a Jerk" on the radio, I was like, "What in the world is this???" But then I was advised by a friend that I shouldn't judge an artist by one song. So I listened to New Boyz' album Skinny Jeanz & a Mic in its entirety and, well, that's actually the best song.

Now, Legacy and Ben J aren't horrible rappers, but they don't have a whole heck of a lot to say either (yeah, I know they were only 17 when this was recorded, but still). All their songs are either about clothes or girls, and they talk about it in very uninteresting ways. "Cashmere" has the duo taking shots at each other in order to get a girl's attention until they realize she's a lesbian, and "Bunz" is a clumsy tribute to the female backside. "So Dope" is anything but while "No More" made me say just that. And "Way 2 Many Chickz" (which details having a lot of unattractive women) has Legacy being turned off because "[the girl's] breath smelled like fat kids in a box". What?

This is also another one of those cases where the guest stars are unknowns but they aren't really WORTH knowing, especially Kydd-SB on the aforementioned "Bunz". While the beat on "Cricketz" and a few decent R&B hooks here and there save the album from getting one star, Skinny Jeanz & a Mic is nothing to get excited about. Of course, people over the age of 18 have no business checking for this anyway, but I just hope these guys really improve their craft for next time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only a jerk would like this, 15 Feb 2010

When I first heard You're A Jerk(on the radio), I thought it was just another southern rap group trying to cash in on party jams. Much to my dismay I was informed by friends that it was group from the West Coast and that there was a whole dance craze movement that was spawned from it. On an off day I checked it out on YouTube. My jaw hit the floor when I saw people from the most aggressive coast in hip hop dancing like a bunch of nancy boys(with skin tight clothing and bright colors that scream flamboyant effeminate) to a bunch of repetitive pseudo-southern beats where everybody raps like Lil Wayne(and really is the game that bad when you have to model your flow like him of all people?). I said that to say this: the jerkin movement is perhaps the worst thing to happen to the west coast period. Its trends like these that make me stay away from the radio as well as the television. The New Boyz and this album are a testament to everything that is wrong with today's rap.

These kids rap the same on every song and tracks like Cricketz, Dot Com, You're A Jerk, Colorz, Way 2 Many Chickz prove my point perfectly. You'd be kidding yourself if you thought Cashmere, Turnt and Bunz were tight. New Girl is the cheesiest chick record I've heard next to Ja Rule's Mesmerized and Sheek Louch's One Name. Tie My Down feat Ray J is just as corny.

In short the New Boyz Skinny Jeanz & A Mic is the worst rap album of 2009 hands down. The beats as well as the rhymes are repetitive and lame and this album loses its purpose outside of a club. When I think of west coast rap I want to remember nicely sampled Parliament records over smooth beats or hard edged beats that scare the hell out of the establishment. Say what you want about Gangsta Rap being ignorant and obscenely violent.. at least its manly and to a certain extant some of it focused its attention on subjects of substance. Jerkin Music doesnt do that plus I cant see anybody from the "hood" cruising through the streets of LA bumping You're A Jerk or I Rock Skinnies in a 64 Cadillac. I'm sorry I just cant.

When I think of West Coast rap I want to remember Ice Cube, Ice-T, Tupac(RIP), C-Bo, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien , Yukmouth, NWA, Eazy-E(RIP), Blackalicious, Mack-10, WC, Mc Eiht, Xzibit, Dru Down, Too Short, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr Dre, E-40, Spice 1, K-Dee, Bad Azz, Jayo Felony, The Dogg Pound, Paris, The Coup, D.O.C., The Conscious Daughters, Above The Law, The Alcoholiks, Cypress Hill, Mc Ren, Rappin 4-tay, RBX and every other true west coast rapper that represents Cali hip hop. When I think of the West Coast I dont want to remember the New Boyz or any of these skin tight clothes wearing, booty popping, skittles colored outfit wearing, same song making, Lil Wayne flow taking, hypersexual fruitbaskets that make up the jerkin movement!

Tracks to look out for: dont make me laugh!
