Product Description

Library Journal, Meagan Storey, Virginia Beach, Sep 15, 2011 Since 2005, Barnouin has spread the "Skinny Bitch" series message with coauthor Rory Freedman. In Barnouin's second solo book, after Skinny Bitch: Ultimate Everyday Cookbook, she expands the discussion of cruelty-free, environmentally friendly living beyond the kitchen. She explains how toxins from household items such as paint and upholstery affect our bodies and the environment. Clothing and personal beauty items are similarly scrutinized with the sass and attitude (e.g., the subsection "Toxins in Our Hoo-Has") found in Barnouin's previous books. In sections like "The Shit List: The Worst Ingredients in Your Medicine Cabinet," her casual approach and clear language help consumers decipher labels full of chemical compounds. She also advocates sustainable-living practices as ways to avoid unhealthy products and overconsumption in general. Ample endnotes (primarily citing websites) allow readers to find more information, and the author provides specific product recommendations. VERDICT By now the target demographic knows what to expect from a "Skinny Bitch" title, and they will not be disappointed by Barnouin's latest book." Ethical holiday gift guide at Pomp & Circumstance " ... a kick-ass rundown of everything from cleaning products to furniture, cosmetics to accessories and well beyond. An encyclopedia of sorts, it proved for me a real page-turner. I was blown away by some of the realities she laid out."

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!!! 4 Oct 2011

Another fabulous book from Kim Barnouin, I truly appreciate the research she did to write this one. I had never thought about all of the chemicals lurking in my home and the book provides insight and solutions to all things toxic. I really appreciated the section on beauty products, it's unbelievable what is lurking in an innocent looking tube of lipstick. Thanks to this book I will be able to clean out my home and get rid of the products I had lying around that are potentially harmful. After reading this you will understand how to rid your furniture of nasty chemicals, clean out your old stash of harmful beauty products, create your own compost bin and grow an organic garden (even with limited space!). I highly recommend this helpful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!!! Best Purchase Ever 5 Dec 2011

So I'm a pretty healthy girl, but I had NO idea what creepy stuff was lurking in my home, beauty products, my BED, and other totally obvious places. Kim gives it straight, with no BS, which I love. I've heard about some of the concerns mentioned in this book, but she does a really good job of explaining things in a simple way (while also backing things up with research). I LOVE the Skinny Bitch books and this is just another great example of why we need to get our homes clean (in addition to our bodies!). I also found her website [...], that talk about all this kind of stuff as well - super helpful for me personally and if you want to learn more about these topics. Definitely don't regret buying this book. I think everyone can benefit from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is changing how I live my life 18 Nov 2011
By Kristen L. Zaleski - Published on
I didnt love Skinny Bitch. But this book is pretty eye opening and already I am making small changes in my life: changing my sponges (biodegrable now), new soap for my daughter, different face cream for myself, using white vinegar to clean windows, and considering others. I have recommended it to other people too. Its a book that is not a cover to cover read, but rather something to look through before bed or on the throne :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! 17 Jan 2012

I can't say enough how incredible this woman and this book is!! I have decided to change my life this year. For my son and myself. I no longer want to just live each day going through the motions and buying things because they are on sale. I want to know exactly what I am putting in and on the outside of our bodies. This book is just what I needed!!! So far most of it is shocking to me and I find myself just sitting and crying because I feel naive and I just can't believe the horrible things going on in the world and the CRAP we put in our bodies and our homes! But this book is incredible and I am so thankful that she wrote this book. I am going to recommend to everyone I know!
