Garner and Gossett Jr. have the perfect scheme pre-civil war south and by selling and reselling they make a fair living. Naturally things go wrong.
This movie is a great surprise if you have not seen it. It is like seeing the first of any great movie idea. Remember the first Star wars? Or Support Your Local Sheriff (1969)." Later you are jaded and already used to the type of movie. This is one up on Garner's character in Maverick (1994). And Louis Gossett Jr. excels as he did in Enemy Mine (1985) where he is still on the other side of a larger Mason-Dioxin line.
Better tape your ribs before watching this one.

SKIN GAME 30 May 2011
By Dr. S. S. Nagi TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This movie was first released in 1971(1999)2010, in super widescreen 2.4.1, technicolour and runs for 102 minutes. The sound and the picture quality is very good and the only extra is a short full screen 1.33.1 trailor. The film starts in MISSOURI 1857, as Quincy(JAMES GARNER) brings in Jason(LOU GOSSETT), tied up, to the town of 'Dirty Shame', to sell him as a slave. They get into a saloon and Quincy tells evrybody about Jason's qualities. He is sold for $400/-. As expected, Jason escapes and joins Quincy to divide the loot. Jason had been sold many times before. Moving to Kansas Territory, Quincy provides Jason with new transportation - a donkey!. Next they see Plunkett (EDWARD ASNER), bringing in run-a-way slaves from Nabraska. Plunkett offers $200/- for Jason, but Quincy refuses. Next town is 'Fair Shake'. They run into Ginger(SUSAN CLARK), who steals Qunicy's $5/-piece and his gold watch. While Quincy sleeps in a hotel, Jason has to sleep in the stables, where he meets Naomi(BRENDA SYKES), who is also on sale as a slave. Ginger knows Quincy and Jason from Tennesse. Jason wants Quincy to buy him Naomi from the auction. So Quincy buys her for $1000/-, with Jason's money. Then just as Jason is being sold again, John Brown(ROYAL DANO) comes with his gang and releases all the slaves and takes them away in a wagon. Quincy goes after them and finds Jason in a forest. They find that all their money had been stolen by Ginger, so they have to start again. Next town is 'Bitter End', where they run into Plunkett again.
How will it end? What is Plunkett upto? Can Quincy and Jason get their money back? Where is Ginger now? What has happened to Naomi? Will others spot Quincy, Jason and Ginger's tricks? Will the law take care of them? Where will Quincy, Jason, Ginger and Naomi end up?
James Garner and Lou Gossett give good performances and Susan Clark looks good on screen. This story of RICHARD ALAN SIMMONS of 1850's is well photographed by NED KOENEKAMP with good direction by PAUL BOGART. The audience should see this DVD in light of what it was then in 1850's only and as a comedy.
James Garner(JAMES SCOTT BUMGARNER) was born on 7.4.1928 in Norman, Oklahoma. His mother was 1/2 Cherokee, but died when he was 5 years old. Garner hated his stepmother, WILMA, who beat him and his brothers. So one day he left for good. After working at many jobs, at 16, he joined US Merchant Marine, later to join Hollywood High School. Then he joined the US Army and served in Korea. He left Army after been wounded twice. He moved to TV commercials in 1954. This is when in 1956, he changed his name from 'Bumgarner' to 'Garner'. From 1957 to 1960, he starred in TV western series -'Maverick'. After more comedy films, he worked as TV Private Investigator -'The Rockford Files' in 1974. He last starred in 2007 -'The Ultimate Gift'. He married 'LOIS CLARKE' in 1956. He has 2 daughters, KIMBERLY and GRETA. In 2000, both his knees were replaced and he had quintuple bypass heart surgery on 22.4.1988. He is now 83 years old.
Some of James Garner westerns are:-
(1) Hour of the Gun, 1967(2005)
(2) A Man Called Sledge, 1971(2004)
(3) Duel at Diablo, 1965(2003)
(4) Support Your Local Sheriff, 1969(2011)
(5) Support Your Local Gunfighter, 1971(2001)
(6) One Little Indian, 1973(2003)
(7) Streets of Loredo, 1995
(8) Castaway Cowboy, 1974(2000)
(9) Maverick Series, 1957(1993)
(10)The Trail of Tears, Cherokee Legacy, 2006
Watch and ENJOY.

easy comedy western 20 July 2011

Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
another top end warner bros archive release, widescreen is 2.41,just about as good as blu ray and nice mono sound, anyone still thinking of taking the plunge on these dvd-r disc`s,do so,I have now bought about half a dozen movie`s like this and all are as good as the real thing, most are hard to get film`s only before on stone age vhs or private colector dvd-r`s,which are recorded of tv etc, these are proper released dvd`s,but pricey due to small print run, garner made about 3 or 4 comedy western`s which are all worth collecting.A bit dated now but you still get a laugh, most are spot the supporting actor who went on to better thing`s as all these movie`s are now heading for 40 years old, great rainny sunday afternoon entertainment go buy now.
