Building on the success of the first edition Alan Hargreaves together with Dick Bate have produced a resource that is truly relevant to every coach irrespective of individual style and experience. It covers all aspects of the job; from philosophy to match management, providing key advice for coaches working with players of all abilities. Every essential soccer skill is covered in a progressive manner in order to get optimum results from players in real match situations. There are extensive chapters on tactics, which provide advice on team formation and set-pieces for offensive and defensive situations. 5.0 out of 5 stars A benchmark manual 17 Dec 2009
By Anon
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This latest edition of the Alan Hargreaves and Richard Bate manual is the most professionally presented I've seen. The print is colour and glossy, diagrams and tables are crystal clear, and the information is organised in clear defined units.

Part 1: Preparing the Coach, gives information and advice on how to coach football players and clubs.

Part 2: Skills and Techniques, analyses eight distinct areas, starting from the basics.

Part 3: Tactics and Teamwork, discusses the Principles of Play, and different formations, and set prices.

Part 4: Team Management, covers the role of the manager/coach with a team, and also discusses physical fitness.

Although I would suggest the information in here is relatively basic, there is no doubt that certain sections would be useful to any coach, especially the Principles of Play chapter. All the key tecniques are listed and explained in great detail. There are numerous drills and training games described and illustrated. Perfect for coaching youth/junior football.

In summary: A highly useful manual, well presented, clear concise ideas, aimed at youth/amateur football. This surely must be the benchmark manual for all youth coaching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for FA Level 1 coaches and above 22 Jun 2011
By Sajjio
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book and used it really for the 'advice' rather than the drills/excersizes. I have since loaned it to my level 1 coach/assistant and she is picking up a lot from it.

It has great colourful pages and they really put some effort into this book. I would recommend to all new coaches, but experienced coaches could find better.

Each section is broken down by activity type and then by difficulty. There is a great contents section to help you find what you need.

The advise is good also, such as dealing with kids/parents etc
