Product Description

Product Description

"Well written and thoughtfully structured, this highly accessible, lively text offers the reader a contemporary and comprehensive introduction to psychodynamic practice. Howard provides lucid explanations of core psychodynamic ideas and skills rooted in engaging clinical illustrations. It will be an invaluable companion both during and beyond training"

Prof Alessandra Lemma, Trust-wide Head of Psychology and Visiting Professor, Essex University

This practical text is the first to systematically address the competencies and techniques identified as central to the delivery of effective psychodynamic practice. It provides a framework for the therapist to develop their skills and apply them to their practice by:

- discussing the personal and professional growth which underpins a professional and ethical attitude to the therapist's work

- linking specific competencies to the theory base underpinning them

- describing competencies in a systematic way

- including a chapter on how to use supervision

- using case material to illustrate competencies and dilemmas.

Addressing not only how to implement skills, but why they are being implemented, this book is a must-read for all trainees on psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy courses. It is also useful reading for trained practitioners who want an accessible introduction to psychodynamic skills in practice.

I have read quite a few books recently on Psychodynamic Counselling, and this is by far my favourite. It is relevant and lively, with many case examples and stimulating comments and perspectives. It explains why skills are implemented, and how, linking it accessibly to the theory in practical and insightful ways. A very interesting chapter looks at working with unconscious communication, and another on interpreting transference and counter-transference. It is a book I will want to keep returning to throughout my work. Highly recommended.

I am training in the psychodydnamic approach. I have read books at an equivalent level to this book by Jacobs, Spurling, McLoughlin etc and while these were all valuable I found Howard's book to be the most useful. I feel it sets out what you really need to know when you are starting to practice in a much more structured, clear and practical way than the other books. However, as well as setting out the practicalities it also covers theory in a succinct way that allows the reader to see the relevance of it in practice. Another thing I like about this book is that there is a sense when reading it that the author really understands the struggles and difficulties inherent in the training.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in counselling but especially those starting out in Psychodynamic training. I am in my first year of the Certificate course and it is one of the best books I have read so far. It clearly explains the key concepts of the psychodynamic approach and helps explain the complexities of transference, countertransference and defences.
