Book Description

PTLLS candidates often find it challenging to approach their studies. Some are returning to study after a long break and others have no previous experience of study at this level. This text is an accessible guide to studying for PTLLS. It begins by looking at how to prepare for study and taught sessions, and goes on to cover self-study, including research skills and reflective practice. Guidance on presenting work gives tips on structure and writing and on presentations. The book also includes information on how to progress study further, beyond PTLLS, and how to recognise newly acquired transferable skills.

Review

"I can't believe how I coped without this book. I will be recommending this to the learners because it offers essential preparation and support for the PTLLS course. It will 'de-mystify' essential aspects of teaching and learning." Lecturer, Totton College

About the Author

Ann has been working in the Lifelong Learning Sector since 1983 and is currently teaching at Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire. She has her own educational training consultancy Ann Gravells Ltd which specialises in teaching, training and quality assurance.

She began her career as a hotel receptionist and then progressed to training new staff on the job. She was approached by a college to teach the Hotel Reception course on a part time basis and this began her teaching career. A few years later, after gaining the necessary qualifications, she began teaching full time and also delivered staff training programmes. Ann's role brought her in to contact with many City & Guilds' External Verifiers and soon became one herself. This gave her the opportunity to become involved with the development of the new teacher training qualifications in 2006. It was during this time she had the idea for a textbook to support new trainee teachers, written in plain English and at a level to suit anyone new to the subject.

The book Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) became a bestseller and is now in its 5th Edition. Ann has since written and co-written several other textbooks.

Throughout her career Ann has kept up to date with her own professional development and has achieved a Masters Degree in Educational Management, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Degree in Education as well as Management, and Learning & Development qualifications. Ann is a Fellow of the Institute for Learning, holds Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status and is a Licentiate of City & Guilds.

Ann achieved a Medal of Excellence for Teaching at Bishop Burton College in 2007. This medal was presented to Ann by Ed Balls. One of her students was the first in England to achieve the PTLLS Award. Ann has co-written the International teaching qualifications for City & Guilds, and delivered events in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Jacklyn Williams has been teaching since 1995, developing, managing and teaching business education, Skills for Life, key skills and teacher education. She has worked in sectors including FE, HE, personal and community development learning, family learning, the Prison Service and work-based learning. She also works nationally as a trainer and consultant, and is an External Quality Assurer for the City & Guilds teacher education qualifications. /par1/Jacklyn has QTLS status, holds a MA in Education, and is an NLP Master Practitioner, which bring an added dimension to her teacher education.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plugs the academic gap 20 Sep 2011
By Daniel Park TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The sister book to Gravell's equally useful "Passing PTTLS assessments", this is a very useful textbook, particularly if you haven't studied to level 3 or 4 for a long time.

The advantage of the PTTLS/CTTLS/DTTLS route is that very able people from non-academic backgrounds can hope to achieve teaching qualifications in their own right. The disadvantage is that often academic study skills are missing from many of these people.

This book plugs the gap admirably and allows you to achieve your PTTLS qualification with confidence.

Quite simply if you have done a degree and got a reasonable mark you won't need this book because everything in it regarding study skills will be redundant to you. If, however, you are studying for a PTLLS and you have not been through a university education or studied at Level 5 and upwards then this book will be of great practical use to you and teach you what you need to know. It will be bought by many who do not need it and would be better advised to spend their money on other books for PTLLS such as Francis & Gould's "Achieving your PTLLS award" or one of Ann Gravells's many, many offerings.
