"This excellent skill-based resource to using the gestalt approach to counselling provides exactly what the practitioner and student need to know in an easy-to-navigate format. Filled with practical case examples, this comprehensive and highly readable book reveals the power of the gestalt approach in action. I know I will return to it again and again." - Teresa Lewis, Founder and Director of Lewis Psychology CIC

Product Description

Skills in Gestalt Counselling & Psychotherapy, Second Edition is a practical introduction to the application of the Gestalt approach at each stage of the therapeutic process. Taking the reader through these stages, the book focuses on skills which arise out of Gestalt theory as well as those invoked by the therapeutic relationship.

As well as offering guidance on practice issues affecting counsellors such as assessment and treatment considerations, using a variety of Gestalt techniques, and developing client awareness, this fully updated edition has been expanded to represent new developments in the psychotherapy field. New material includes:

- the implications of neuroscience and psychotherapy outcome research for the therapeutic relationship

- new chapters exploring action research, disturbed and disturbing clients, and Gestalt supervision and coaching

- short-term work in primary care and the NHS.

This is an ideal text for use on counselling and counselling skills courses, especially those training in Gestalt, and recommended reading for anyone who uses Gestalt skills in their work.

This book provides excellent, pragmatic and accessible insights into the practicalities of the Gestalt approach. Not simply a textbook, it answers the 'how to' questions in readable form that other books on Gestalt often don't, and provides a clarity that one doesn't come across elsewhere. Clearly backed by the authors' extensive experience and knowledge, and broad-ranging in its scope, it is nevertheless down-to-earth and accessible.Skills in Gestalt Counselling & Psychotherapy (Skills in Counselling & Psychotherapy Series)

new beginnings.... 4 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a well written book which takes you into the Gestalt world of psychotherapy.
This world seems very intense and almost insular. You have to understand the theory and practice of the therapists and it does help to put you into their world. There are many examples which can help would-be therapists as well as lay people who want some self-help.
It may be that there is a book somewhere that is right to read before this to prepare readers to understand the entire Gestalt theory and way of life in therapy, but this is an excellent book that will help a range of readers.

I ordered this book after attending a workshop on 'open chair' work for counsellors.
Although I am not trained in this model I found it very easy to read and understand. I like the quality of paper and good size of print. The book is set out in a way that is suitable for trainee counsellors but also useful for more experienced therapists wanting to add another tool for their client work. There are bold print headings, numerous examples and suggestions to back up the text. The book also gives explanations of terms and ways of working which are helpful for students of any model of counselling. It is easy to dip in and out of and I would recommend it especially for trainees and newly qualified counsellors although it is easy enough to be understood by anyone with an interest in the subject.
