I purchased this CD directly from the band's website after hearing a track on a Prog rock Mag's free samler CD. Quite frankly it is one of the best peices of Progressive Rock for a decade. If you like Gabriel period Genesis and the early Marillion sound, then this will not disapoint, although the music is much darker and in places heavier, the influences are worn proudly. The comparrison may be old hat. Most artists who aspire or are pidgeon-holed into this genre are measure by these two (along side Yes and Floyd), but the phrasing of Cyrus' vocals makes this inevitable. Stand out tracks are 'The Hunting of Johnny Eve' and 'Lost in Lonely Ghosts' however this would be a little misleading, as with all the best concept albums the whole thing should be listened to from beginning to end.
In a world where music appears to be centred around the production of cheap television, the fact that thee are bands such as Citizen Cain still making such music must be seen as a breath of fresh air.

There are lots and lots of intelligent lyrics on offer here, and that, for me, is a bit of a problem. Sometimes the songs don't have room to breathe for the weight of words to digest, presumably to carry the narrative or concept of the whole. Having said that, there are plenty of fine moments to be enjoyed, namely, 'Darkest Sleep' and 'The Hunting Of Johnny Eue'. Any reference to Gabriel-like vocals for me are unimportant as that particular singer hasn't produced anything remotely like this for about 4 decades, so is irrelevant. All in all, a good album that, with many more listens may well become a favourite once it's been fully learned.

Retro-prog (contradictio in terminis) at its best! A record Genesis (with Gabriel) would have been proud of (if they had made it).

Like one of the other reviewers, I bought this after hearing a track on a Prog mag sampler. I have to admit that on the first couple of listens to the song in isolation ('The Hunting of Jonny Eue') I thought the music was superb but the lyrics were a bit silly. However, listened to within the context of the whole album (concept in style and all tracks segue-ing beautifully), the lyrics are absolutely fine.

In style and sound there's a definite feel of early Genesis. It's all very 'Trick of the Tail', but with hints of 'Fountain of Salmacis' thrown in for good measure. But I wouldn't get too hung up on these sorts of comparisons. To me 'Skies Darken' is a nod in Genesis' direction without being a carbon copy.

Musically this is a fine album with extremely good playing throughout. There's a real mix of styles and tempos, with motifs being repeated throughout and further developed as the tale unfolds. Lyrically, it's extremely interesting with various references to mythologies, nursery rhymes and fairy tales. I'd like to say I understand it all, but I'd be lying!

If you like well played, inventive melodic progressive rock, you should add this to your collection.

THIS CD OF CITIZEN CAIN is a pleasant surprise, has all the elements of a good progressive rock of the 70's, which does not displease me in the least. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those that like the GENESIS's style! The voice of the singer is very similar to Peter Gabriel and the Music very good. This is what Genesis should be playing now!!! No way!
