When I ordered this book the price had dropped to around £3, had I paid the current £16 I think my opinion of the book might be different.
The author details how to sketch outdoors with pen and ink, the materials he describes are all still available but there are newer alternative(fountain pens). He gives a few exercises that can be done to improve pen control and spends a lot of time explaining how to build your drawings using only ink. The chapters the show different ways of composing your drawings using tones are good and the authors drawings clarify his writing.

If you have read Rendering in Pen & Ink by Guptil you probably won't find much new information in this book and as it's a similar price I would say buy the Guptil book but if you can get this book for under £5 it's worth reading.

I was given this book in 1952 when I was 14 yrs old. unfortunately I didnt bother to study it in any detail and placed it away in my libary. after 30 or 40 years I lent it to someone. My interest in drawing was rekindled in retirement and Iremembered this Book but not the person that Ient it to. To my surprise I saw that amazon has reprints of it available. On reading my new copy of "Sketching without a master i realized that there were many helpful hints and useful observations and solid teaching for the beginning artist within its pages. Some of the materials quoted were somewhat out of date but the book is a useful guide to the budding pen and ink artist
