I wanted to review this album in isolation form other Friese-Greene projects. The trouble is, most people who will wash up in this small corner of Amazon will be in search of some kind of post-Talk Talk fix. For this reason it needs putting into context. This is not the magnificent production piece of Spirit of Eden, nor the epic guitar sound of the first Catherine Wheel album; niether is it the raw garage noise of some Heligoland recordings. But if you can hear the connection between all of those albums, you will find it again here - stripped to the minimum.
I can see why references to jazz are made: the instrument combination of piano, double bass and drums is classic. But jazz - to me - implies a foundation in some kind of groove, even if only on a very fundamental level. This album on the other hand genuinely sounds like a someone sketching, sparsely, with the instruments. It is Ellington's '
Money Jungle' with the jazz sucked out.
If you are looking for toe-tapping tunes to hum, this may not be for you. If you like the Friese-Greene sound coupled with the minimalist approach, give this a go.
Personally I like this album - a lot.
