Book Description

16 Mar 2009 1856695824 978-1856695824
Sketchbooks provides a revealing glimpse into the inner workings and private inspiration of creatives from the world of advertising, design, graphic design, fashion design, art, street art, and illustration.

Intimate and often unseen, sketchbooks document the sources of inspiration as well as the journey to final execution. They showcase ideas and how these evolve and change into accomplished works. Fresh and spontaneous, their style connects directly with current illustration trends.

The material is complemented by interviews where artists explain how they use their sketchbooks and how these relate to finished works. These, along with the sketchbooks themselves, will give readers a direct and unmediated insight into the process of research and creation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great selection, well presented 19 Sep 2009
Format:Hardcover
Big fan of Laurence King books and this doesn't disappoint - good selection of artists, illustrators, designers, wide selection of styles, although many aren't traditional sketches but digital and collage.

4.0 out of 5 stars why good sketching isn't drawing 19 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
Very good examples for design students. They always think you have to be an excellent drawing artist to be able to sketch. Not true, a good handwriting in decent sketching is all there is to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars neat sketch book 21 Mar 2013

This is an inspirational book for illustrators, designers & artists, partly because there are so few books like it. Although it contains some good work overall I found it would have been improved by showing the sketchbooks of some fine artists and not just commercial artists. This would be an interesting contrast in itself and perhaps help balance out the slightly overly neat & considered aspect of many of the pages in this book. I think I wanted something a bit less graphic but I'd still recommend it to anyone interested in sketchbooks.

2.0 out of 5 stars sketchbook 16 Feb 2013
By Shabby chic artist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Expected a serious time consuming work of sketchbook - instead it showed scrapbook without the conscious of design. Liked the jacket but not the inside.

3.0 out of 5 stars more pizzazz than wow (o. k. ) 20 Aug 2010

Thumbing through this book was a little bit of a let down ,I have seen better books on the raw materials of creatives .Yes ,we are dealing with designers here ,it is a good book, but one I highly recommend is :" Inspired How Creative People Think , Work , and Find Inpiration " By Dorte Nielsen and Kiki Hartman ."Sketchbooks " Text is much more helpful ,showing different ways creatives get their ideas ,so many inspiring ways that they get them !The visuals are not too inspiring to me .I'm just one person. But if you want to read how designers get inspiration ,this book is helpful .
