"An amazing tale of 70's life on a remote Scottish farm" Southall Film Studios

“I have to state right now that we never had any intention of buying a farm. Least of all in South West Scotland. It wasn't one of those nice, rational decisions that we all think we will make, when the time comes. It was totally irrational and made absolutely no sense at all - but we made it just the same!”

So begins a new life for Jennie and her actor husband Conrad, star of the long-running TV series, William Tell. This is the story of their titanic struggles against cold, wind, drought, disease, illness and ill luck of every kind in their establishing of a home and a viable farm against the backdrop of a mountain called Skeoch.

We feel with the author the joy of bringing a newborn lamb back from the brink of death, and the anguish of losing a herd of dairy cattle to brucellosis. There is the day when the hay garnered at great pains blows away along with the barn in which it was stored, and times when financial ruin threatens. There are deprivations, born with fortitude and good humour, but also the delights of introducing two small daughters to life on the farm and the natural world around it.

This is a book which envelops you in its world and has you feeling every disaster and every triumph as if you had lived it.

About the Author

Jennie Phillips lived her early life in London before moving to Skeoch and then emigrated from there to Northern France where she and her actor husband, Conrad, set about restoring a dilapidated farmhouse. This was all despite neither of them speaking French. After 20 years spent in France, she now lives in Wiltshire where, apart from writing, she also sells paintings (mostly landscapes), plays music, knits (including copious numbers of sweaters for her grandchildren) and cooks. Among Jennie’s favourite authors are Maureen Lipman, Derek Tangey and Ken Follett and she particularly likes reading about the emotional lives of people and poetry. Her particular and heartfelt thanks go out to her family and her husband, Conrad. for all their support and encouragement towards writing Skeoch. From the beginning of the story I felt part of the action, the graphic descriptions of situations were amusing and an accurate portrayal of a Scottish crofters life.
The enduring loneliness, weather and basic daily living conditions left me wanting more. The animals were like an extended family and I eagerly awaited what was going to happen next!
An amazing tale of 70's life on a remote Scottish farm mixed with a heart warming glimpse into a loving family and their trials and tribulations.
A very entertaining, enjoyable and easy read on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful warm read! 9 Oct. 2013

I was riveted, not only because the author was telling her own personal tale but because the style of writing flowed so effortlessly and was so captivating. It made me smile and it touched my heart as I read what they had all gone through. A wonderful read that I would recommend to anyone. I was curious as to wether the author would captivate me in the same way with a fictional tale so I was delighted to find she had published another called 'Doreen's dream' which I was able to track down through Any Subject Books! The same warmth and humour shone through! Thanks Jennie! I'm looking forward to the next one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 8 Jan. 2014

Delighted with this book. Being an "older" reader I was so delighted that I found a book that was not peppered with bad language like so many books today. The story is so lovely about a difficult existence in a remote part of Scotland, but what is important to the writer was her family and their feelings. I also enjoyed her sense of honour, I was right there with her!! This book was so good that I have ordered a other book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars maybe one day !!! 2 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
i dream of one day being able to live in a remote croft in the wild of scotland as far away from the rat race as possible !
i know i am not the only one and this book subdues my daily obsession with dreaming just how different life would be living life this way.
along the lines of "the kerracher man" and "a croft in the hills" , "skeoch" tells the tale of jennie phillips and her actor husbands move to a hill farm near dumfries and the trials and tribulations they faced [ i believe this was the 70's].
written ,with at times, great humour, jeannie portrays an idilic lifestyle which at times tested her family to the limits.
if you dream of getting away from it all in wild surroundings you will enjoy this book.
i purchased the tablet pc version which was easily downloaded and extremely easy to read.
takes up a lot less room than my extensive book collection...i could get into this new fangled tablet reading !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 20 Aug. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A wonderful book and from Jennie's descriptive writing I could easily picture Skeoch and all its characters. Even more interesting by way of the fact that I had only known of Conrad as William Tell from my favourite childhood TV programme - but after reading Skeoch I see him in a whole new light. What a versatile treasure of a man and what a great team he and Jennie are, having risen to all sorts of challenges. I am now reading Conrad's book which is equally as enjoyable as Jennie's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 3 July 2013

I really loved this book. A delightful story of family life with animals set in superb scenery. The downside of their new life at Skeoch is not brushed over but amid the hardships Jennie Phillips tells us of the beauty of their surroundings and the joys of living the life they chose after living in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too short! 11 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
An absolute joy to read, what a beautiful yet demanding place Skeoch is. You can only marvel as the author skips through her years on this isolated hill farm after moving there from London, bearing children, learning farming and becoming part of the community. I was only sorry that the family left Skeoch so soon and that the stories came to an end!
