Review

'Good solid traditional detection...Highly enjoyable' Literary Review 'Lovesey is famous for the fine craftsmanship of his cunning plots, along with a gentle wit and a clear eye for human foibles, and his 10th book in the Diamond series is a perfect showcase for all those skills' Morning Star 'Customary wit and gentle humour that mystery lovers have come to expect from the British master of the genre' Boston Globe 'Diamond is a classic' New York Times 'Lovesey's combination of wit, deduction and great characters is on display in a cunning mystery that would make Agatha Christie envious' The Globe and Mail (Toronto) 'Peter Lovesey is the real deal - a top master of the police procedural' The Seattle Times 'Thank goodness for Peter Lovesey. When you pick up a book with his name on it, you can always be assured of a good read' Denver Post 'A satisfyingly twisty crime thriller' Sunday Telegraph

Review

Lovesey has an extraordinary talent for picking up the conventions of the classic English detective novel and delivering them with an entirely contemporary twist (Val McDermid )

No-one has done this kind of thing better since Dorothy L. Sayers . . . A must for crime buffs (Mail on Sunday ) --This text refers to the Perfect Paperback edition.

Peter Lovesey's mysteries centered around Peter Diamond, Head of Bath's CID are a satisfying read. He is an accomplished writer who uses words skilfully. With simple prose and careful descriptions he creates a fully rounded and believable character. Peter Diamond is not the intellectual sleuth of many detective novels, rather a person with bull-headed certainty in his own opinion and sound common sense. He is likeable for his flaws and his credibility as a real person. The books are lightened by a gentle irony and a sense of humour.

Peter Lovesey creates mysteries as complex as any by the likes of Dorothy L Sayers and the masters of mystery fiction. He poses an intellectual puzzle without the need for gratuitous violence or graphic descriptions. They are a game of chess where characters are moved and scenes carefully built up and your brain is fully engaged at all times.

Skeleton Hill is superb, one of his best books to date. Peter Diamond is as acerbic and single minded as ever, trying to find the keys to two murders, linked by their location but separated by 20 years. The dual murders are investigated simultaneously and we are led to believe they may have been made by the same killer. Wisely Peter Lovesey has given Paloma, his girlfriend a secondary role, providing assistance and a sounding board to Peter Diamond but not detracting from the storyline. False clues and several suspicious characters draw you into the plot and I found the book hard to down. Like his other books I know I will enjoy re-reading this one again at a later point when I can spot the trail of subtle clues leading to the real killer. Highly recommended for all lovers or traditional mystery with a modern twist. Like it predeccesors it is cleverly written, where the reader is fully engaged at all times. This series is crying out to be put onto prime-time television. I had read that the rights had been sold several years ago but I have yet to see any signs of Peter Diamond making it to the small screen. What a wasted opportunity which I hope Peter Lovesey will try to remedy.

I've enjoyed a number of Peter Lovesey's books and rank this one as one of the best. It's a very well-crafted story with several threads including two murders committed over a decade apart that are convincingly explained by the end of the book. There are many characters in the book, not least because both Bath and Bristol police are involved, but the author brings them all to life on the page and so it's easy to keep track of who is whom. Several of the characters take part in re-enactments of battles in the English Civil War. The latter activity adds extra colour to the narrative as well as the participants being implicated in the crimes.

Unlike some other crime writers, Lovesey, doesn't dwell on the gruesome aspects of murder and intersperses the realistic workings of police investigations with touches of humour.

This book is part of a series centred on the career of the detective, Peter Diamond, by now Head of Bath CID. You don't need to have read any of the previous books to enjoy this one, but knowing something about Diamond's earlier life does flesh out his character a bit more. Though rather gruff at times he has endearing qualities such as his inability to master new technology.

I don't know the city of Bath that well but imagine that those who do with recognize many of the sites and land-marks that are integral to the story.

If there is another crime writer who is a sure thing, aside from Reg Hill, I don't know who that is. Peter Lovesey has done a remarkable job with a difficult story. Not giving away anything about the plot -- take it as you go -- but be ready for a long engagement.
