5.0 out of 5 stars The Book of Truth, 15 Jun 2005
This review is from: Skarrs (Paperback)
I love the reality of this book. Its makes the story come alive. I think that for a story to be good is has to be believable because if it isn't you don't like it as much. However, I thought the idea of the hairdresser (Derek) being able to pass messages onto Danny from his Grampa a little unbelievable.
I could really imagine the people and places in this book. The place I found easiest to imagine was Vibes, a husky smelling shop that played rock every hour it was open. This is one shop that I wish was real.

I like the idea of Grampa Dan telling his story whilst Danny's story is still going on. At the beginning of his story, Grampa Dan is captured and is close to his death and at the beginning of Danny's story; Danny is living a tough life, involved with alcohol and drugs. As both their stories progress there lives seem to get better; Grampa Dan is travelling (still captured by the Japanese) but is not beaten and is with friends. Danny meets an old friend from school and is concentrating more on school. It seems that Grampa Dan's story is similar to Danny's; they both had a rough life but have moved on to and things are going great.
I liked all of the characters except perhaps Jakey-he was just a bully and a bad influence on Danny. Catherine Forde made sure that all the characters had something to say that was significant to the story.
I thought that having the band Skarrs in the story tied everything together. The lyrics were about the Japanese and racism. They told us what message the story was giving. Drugs get you into so much trouble and you don't have as many friends or opportunities in life if u get involved with them. Also, don't be racist because you have much more friends if you aren't.
Overall I like this book very much. I love how it shows that anyone that is living a tough life can change and sort it out. Catherine Forde has a great style of writing and I will definitely be reading more books by her.
