Really beautiful CD - from way back in 1971, featuring siblings - Micheal O Domhnaill, his sisters - Triona and Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill, and a friend Daithi Sproule (currently in Altan).

Though they are all very young here - (the boys still at University in Dublin, and the girls - still in school) they exhibit total control of the music, yet with a real vibrancy which lifts it above anything you might expect. This CD was re-released in 1998, and has always been very highly regarded in Irish 'Trad' circles.

In subsequent years they all met with musical success - particularly Micheal who co-founded the innovative and highly charged - hugely popular BOTHY BAND, and later the band NIGHTNOISE, who produced many albums - mainly in America. Triona was also in the Bothy Band, and was also the vocalist in Nightnoise. And Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill, deservedly - became one of the most accomplished female Trad singers in Ireland today.

This CD is entirely in Gaelic, with lyrics and English translations enclosed.
The ballads are varied; many from their father's people in North West Donegal Gaeltacht. Some are ancient, some slightly more contemporary, but all highly engaging and evocative. There are no electronics here, or special effects, except the harmonic spell cast by four very able, enthusiastic, and sensitive voices, singing and playing as if that - rather than speech - was their natural mode of communication... Hear them on the sampler - see them on You Tube, and buy the CD here on Amazon!!

why skara brae? 28 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
The family group with the very un-Gaelic name might have been merely a second-rate impersonation of Pentangle - were it not for the quality of the singing. Nothing else, past or present, has been quite like the O Domhnaills. They could probably make 'Bring Me Sunshine' sound terribly sad and just a wee bit sinister. Harmonies aren't traditional in Irish song; it shouldn't work but it does.

All were to go on to bigger and better things. This remains a transitional album, therefore, but a fascinating one.

Traditional Irish Folk Music (primarily vocal) 9 July 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album is surpasssingly beautiful: traditonal Irish ballads rendered in matchless aetherial harmony. For all those who've wasted their money on the later, synthesized Clannad: this is the real thing.

The Dhomhnaill siblings would later form the crux of the Bothy Band, the best of the Irish folk revival groups, while Triona Ni Dhomhnaill would later release a masterful solo album "Triona."

SKARA BRAE; unplugged Irish jewel from 70's finally on CD! 12 Mar 2000
By ben dirks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
In '73 heard one song by "SKARA BRAE" (Cailin rua? )on my little transistor radio (German broadcast about Irish folk music). Went to Ireland in '74, bought the album, took it home to Holland and fell in love with it; *really beautiful singing by 2 men and 2 women in Gaelic, accompanied by subtle, slightly jazzy acoustic guitars and (Triona's)clavinet. Simply the best late night album I could wish for; now finally on CD, where it should be ...(I had been looking for it for almost 20 years now after I gave it away to my ex girl friend and never found another one again ... the album I mean !) *The feeling / sound on this album is a bit like "Nebraska" (Bruce Springsteen) or "The woman I loved so well" (Planxty)or some stuff by Clannad or Alan Stivell ...

This CD is one of my all time favorites. I wish there were more like this. The folk music is sung in Gaelic with beautiful arrangements
