No one else sounds like this. Eick has taken the pensive lyricism and melancholy of his trumpet heroes - including Kenny Wheeler, Chet Baker and Miles Davis - and transformed the influence into something personal. His trumpet sings with great clarity and his solos, like his themes, are melodically memorable.
Eick already has a very substantial listenership, and Skala, which also draws on influences from pop music (Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Sting and Elton John are reference points) will expand it. The Door, Mathias's ECM debut of 2008, was amongst the best-selling jazz albums of that year. In its first week of release it shot into the Norwegian pop charts, and topped jazz best-seller lists across Europe.
Recorded in Oslo, this powerful new album features an expanded Eick band with highly-regarded saxophonist Tore Brunborg (latterly playing with the groups of Tord Gustavsen and Ketil Bjornstad) guesting on the title track. Others include classical harpist Sidsel Walstad of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and keyboardist Morten Qvenild (known for his work with Jaga Jazzist and Susanna Wallumrod).
Personnel: Mathias Eick (trumpet), Tore Brunborg (tenor saxophone), Andreas Ulvo (piano), Morten Qvenild (keyboards), Sidsel Walstad (harp), Audun Erlien (electric bass), Torstein Lofthus, Gard Nilssen (drums)

An amazing set of soundscapes,
By
This review is from: Skala (Audio CD)
If you're looking for a hard blowing trumpet led set of recordings this isn't it. It does, however, present a series of carefully constructed themed soundscapes over which Mathias Eick places his excellent trumpet playing. As much credit ought to go to pianist Andreas Ulvo who provides an excellent counterpoint to Eick on all the tracks, and the rhythmn section of Audun Erlien on electric bass and Torsten Lofthus on drums. Elsewhere there are other significant contributions from excellent soloists. On "Day after" the interplay between Eick and Tore Brunborg on tenor sax is exemplary, and the harp playing of Sidsel Walstad on "June" adds a surreal ethereal quality to the cut. Although Eick's playing is restrained it always suits the themes that are developed in each of the tracks, and the jazz is very European in it's nature (this is not a criticism it's a statement of the fact that Eick draws in apparent influences from the Scandinavian and European classical music traditions). Actually it's quite difficult to write about, but it's an album that you ought to, and can, sit down and listen to, and glean something of what the album is trying to achieve. That I think that it achieves what I see as its aims presses me to recommend it wholeheartedly, and urge those wavering about purchase to take the plunge.

SO MUCH MORE THAN JAZZ,
By Finbar the looney "Charcots" (London uk) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Skala (Audio CD)
With this, the second Mathias Eick album,a whole new vista of oppotunity has aopened up,like the first album 2008,s "The door"The Doorthis is full of well played melodic music, beautifully played. The production is,of course ,wonderfully crisp and clear, but, but this is beyond Jazz, with influences from amongst others,Radiohead and to a lesser extent Joni Mithell. The musicians are Mathias Eik.....Trumpet Andreas Ulvo.....Piano Auden Erlien.....Electric Bass Torsttein Lofthus......Drums Gard Nillsen......Drums Morten Qvenild.....Keyboards Tore Brundberg.....Tenor Saxaphone Sidsel Walstad......Harp All in all, a fine album

Mathias Eick moves beyond The Door.,
By Frank - Published on Amazon.com
This is a near perfect album. Eick is more sure footed than he has ever been. He even plays some vibes, electric guitar and double bass on this outing. Don't worry about the two drummers, or the keyboard, piano and harp in the rhythm section. The music is consistently coherent, swinging and sweet. Yes, there are several great swinging grooves- Skala, Edinburg, Oslo, Joni, Day After. There are fabulous moments throughout, such as, listening to the two drummers and harp on June. Tore Brunborg's tenor is sounding strong, but this is Eick's album and he plays with total commitment.ECM deserves a triple crown for their three releases this week. Eick is also heard on Iro Haarla's Vespers (another 5 star listening experience) and Marcin Wasilewski's new trio effort is delightfully stronger than his January release of 2007. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful:

This CD is not "The Door" 2 !,
By J. Lang "Zen Trumpet" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Skala (Audio CD)
While this CD did not grab me like "The Door" did I found this it to be a great triumph for the huge talent of Mathias Eick. If you listen to this Cd thinking that it will be "The Door" 2 you will be left wondering. However if you open your ears to the different sensibility on display here you will be rewarded with some first rate music making. While it is true that "The Door" will be seen as a watershed release and it would be hard to top that in any case, Skala represents newer thinking utilizing a slightly different emotional pallet. The same compositional skill and high degree of musicianship is manifest by all on this outing. The production style is pure Manfred Eicher but this is Mr. Eicks show where everything is in service to his simple yet profound melodic style. Overdubs and production, which are usually spare on the ECM label, are handled with delicate care and never seem too much. Others reviewers in print media have not been so kind to this CD but I chalk that up to expectation. The details of those reviews were more about comparing this CD with "The Door" than for reviewing this as a stand alone piece of work. Once I listened and opened my ears to what was really accomplished by the extraordinary work done here I found a rewarding and quite often profound voice. This is solid work done by a truly great talent. My only hope is that it will not be so long until the next CD! Congratulations to all concerned and to Mathias Eick for enriching everyone's life with such superb music !!!

Modern and lyrical sensibility,
By loce_the_wizard "loce_the_wizard" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Skala (Audio CD)
Somehow I missed "The Door" and discovered Mathias Eick via "Skala." This CD has been in heavy rotation since, and its wistful yet energetic tone belies the subtle interplay throughout. Mr. Eick likely aggravates some purists by not using his trumpet as a strident bellows, choosing to round his notes and wrap his melodies up in neat lyrical packages. The talented ensemble of performers share and translate his musical ideas articulately deserve individual praise as well, but I know little about any of them except to commend them for not being foils but for being coconspirators on this session. The sound is a bit fuller and richer than the typical ECM offering, and this lushness anchors the work in way the typical stark ECM coloring would not. I like the modern and upbeat sensibility here, and this recording is a new favorite. |
