Two discs 52, 51 minutes each approximately. The sound overall is good-especially considering the age and sources of the original recordings. The booklet gives a handy overview of ska music, song titles, composer (s), and recording dates.
This set contains 40 tracks of prime ska-era (60's) music from both the Island and Trojan labels. Many of the tracks have not been collected before, with some rare sides mixed in. The majority of songs were produced by some of the best Jamaican producers from the era. Names like Byron Lee, Leslie Kong, Rupie Edwards, and Theo Beckford show up on many tracks in this set.
This musical genre lasted a relatively short period of time. Ska was designed primarily for dancing wherever a sound system and people gathered for a good time. One of the main reasons ska didn't remain popular for a longer time was the weather. A long especially hot summer forced dancers to slow down on the dance floor. So the rhythm was slowed down to allow people to dance longer (and drink), and enjoy it more. Whether that's the only reason for ska's demise doesn't really matter, because this style of music is still enjoyed by many, not only for dancing, but for its infectious rhythms.
This set, part of a series to celebrate the label anniversary, has a number of fairly rare tracks, with quite a few never before making it to CD. Not all tracks contain vocals, there are some good examples of instrumentals which add depth to this collection. But again, rarity doesn't really matter because the music on this collection is a good example of ska music from its prime years-vocally or instrumentally. The prime consideration for ska is the beat. The music relied on a medium/fast beat to keep the crowds up and dancing, or at least keep them tapping their feet along to the rhythm.
Artists range from the well known (Byron Lee, THE BLUES BUSTERS, Stranger and Patsy with Ken Boothe, Clancy Eccles, Ernest Raglin, and Derrick Morgan among others), to artists who recorded a song (or at best a few) and then slipped back into oblivion. On this set you'll hear SIR LORD COMIC AND HIS COWBOYS, THE CHERRY PIES, DEE'S GROUP, and THE WONG BROTHERS & THE VIKINGS BAND, and a few others. But whether well known or not, its the music that's important-danceable or listenable or both-and all these tracks have something to offer the ska fan, or someone just starting to listen to this wonderful, short lived music.
For anyone who either already likes ska, or is coming to the music for the first time-this collection is worth purchasing, especially at the low price its being offered. This music will put a smile on your face and get your foot to tapping and, ultimately, that's what good ska is supposed to do. Give it a listen and hear for yourself.
