An enlightening, funny, moving book,

This review is from: Sizable Reflections: Big Women Living Full Lives (Paperback)
As a contributor to this book, my opinion may be slightly biased! However, Shelley Bovey has put together a collection of essays which are bound to entertain and to make you think. Shelley was a regular contributor to the excellent but now defunct "YES!" magazine and she has drawn upon her considerable knowledge of the size acceptance field to compile this book. Many of the women featured wrote for "YES!" some of them (like Dawn French, Miriam Margolyse, Jenni Murray and Jo Brand) need no introduction. While diverse in style and experience all the articles in this book have one thing in common. They tell the story of how women can and do learn to love themselves for who they are, not just for the shape of their bodies. It's funny, full of insight, personal and compassionate. Above all it is a thoroughly good read which is relevant to all of us.

It is full of short, personable, frank, witty and powerful essays which reflect how various women have dealt with society's blatant or thinly-veiled dissaproval of fat women. For many, if not most, self-acceptance was preceeded by vain attempts at starvation and much self-hatred. These are accounts of women who have not only been able to develop a sense of personal self- worth independent of external judgement, but that have through their acheivements, attitudes and personal relationships, challenged the foundations for these judgements. This is a liberating read for women of any size - even 'shrimps'.

Essential reading, an excellent book.,

Having seen a glossy preview of the book with colour pictures of the contributors in a magazine, I was rather disappointed to find that the book was neither glossy nor colourful. A few minutes of reading changed my opinion, colourful characters burst forth from every page, quotable snippets abound. I just want all my friends and colleagues to read it, in fact I want everyone to read it!
