There are stories here to suit everyone's taste. There are stories set in the present and in the recent past as well as historical stories. There are stories involving crimes already committed and those yet to happen and a delightful story about tortoises running shops in Turl Street. One of my particular favourites was 'I Love you, Mr Chicken' where the narrator reminisces about her life and indiscretions in the 1950s. The title story is about a poor boy studying in Oxford in Medieval times and helping a student in a debtors' prison, which has a charming ending. All the stories are set in Oxford, which gives them a coherent identity, even though they are all in different styles and by different authors - both well known and less well known. If you enjoy short stories, you will enjoy this collection.

A SUPERB READ 21 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
It is a real pleasure to read an anthology of such well-written and well-crafted tales. There isn't a dud amongst them. Every one of the thirteen authors who contributed to this anthology has complete mastery of his or her craft.
One story made me cry, several made me laugh out loud - I particularly enjoyed the humour in 'Education in Action' and 'Word Games' - a couple were frankly disturbing; all were intelligently written and thought-provoking. And what a joy to read authors who are so skilled in the use of language.
There are two other books in this series which I haven't read yet - The Bodleian Murders and The Lost College. I have just ordered them and await their arrival with bated breath.
