5.0 out of 5 stars a sheer delight!! 14 Sep 2002
By Deborah MacGillivray HALL OF FAME VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The fun begins when Jocelyn Tanner, jilted by her fiance, decides to go ahead and take the wedding trip to England she planned to take with her new husband. On the trip, she participates in a historical reenactment of a wife sale--where she is the wife for sale--and finds herself sold to a man named Garren Warrick for sixpence.

When he carries her off, she thinks the reenactment has gone a bit too far, and she's ready to get back on the tour bus...then slowly comes to realize that she has been transported to eighteenth-century England where she is, indeed, Garren's wife.

"Sixpence Bride" is an engaging time-travel romance. In her debut novel, the author displays a light touch and brings to life a heroine who is both vulnerable and strong and has enough wackiness to accept the strangeness of her situation with humor and practicality. For instance, finding herself in a fuller body, she gets serious about her ab crunches--much to the consternation of the Warrick household. I won't spoil the joke of the character she chooses to portray at a costume party. Suffice it to say that the charm of this story is the big wink the author shares with her readers

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and extremely unputdownable! 11 May 2005

WOW!!!

What can I say? I ordered this book just to try another author. I am so glad that I picked Ms.Farmer. She has a wonderful talent and this was a sheer delight to read! My only complaint is that it was too short! I could have quite happily read on and on about these funny characters.

This is the story. Jocelyn is a modern day woman who is off on holiday to England on her own after being dumped by her fiance, who was supposed to be with her. She ends up at a little village where they re-enact parts of history. Part of this tour is a bride sale. Unluckily for Jocelyn, she is picked out as the tourist who will play the part of the bride being sold! She feels like nothing else could possibly go wrong.

She changes into her period costume and begins to feel faint when she realises that she hasn't eaten. So she sits down and the next thing is that she's now in another century being auctioned off for real! She doesn't realise this straight away though. She thinks that the villagers around her are just over acting their parts and so she goes along with it all.

Enter our dashing male lead, Garron. He has been given an ultimatum by his father that he must marry within a month or lose his inheritance. All because of a little indiscretion with a woman who was as much to blame as he. Unlucky for Garron, all the decent looking women are already betrothed. This is when he happens upon a bride auction! It seems his prayers are answered. Especially when he sees the fine speciman on display! He makes a bid and wins.

He has no intention of behaving like a married man though. Once he settles his wife at his country estate, he is heading back off to London and the fun. Before he can take any actions though, his new bride begins to behave very peculiarly. She screams when she looks in the mirror and asks what has happened to her body, she speaks funny using words he doesn't understand and appears to be very mad. No wonder he got her so cheap!!!

Anyway what ensues is a delightful story. Everything is so funny. Just being sent back a few hundred years can cause so much confusion. And just what IS wrong with the new Mistress of the house? She keeps having fits on the bedroom floor and calls them 'Ab-Crunches'???

If you want a way to spend a couple of hours in pure heaven, read this book. I have already bought and read another of Ms.Farmers' books, (A Blast To The Past), and enjoyed it immensely. But I did much prefer this one. If you've never read time travel romance before, this would be a very good book to try out first.

I am one very satisfied customer! :o)

4.0 out of 5 stars Sixpence Bride 7 April 2013

What a lovely easy enjoyable read. Not having read anything by this author previously I downloaded this due a Kindle recommendation and the price was to low to resist. I was not disappointed by this book at all. From the first page I was transported into Jocelyn's world and subsequently on her time travel exchange into the 18th century. Whilst there were not any major surprises the story kept my interest throughout and I found myself with a couple of very late nights wanting to know the next stage in Jocelyn's 18th Century adventure. It is humerous in parts especilly when Jocelyn fist arrives in the 18th century thinking everyone is going over the top staying in character and then realises she has a different body, also the masked ball where her husband does not recognise her and his rival gets his commupance.
I am already starting the follow up 'The Spencworth Bride' to see what happens with her 'body/life' exchange Rose
