After the classically styled Touch Me, this was a real return to form and and beefier prospect altogether. With another talented composer in the band - Willie Gilmour - RJG had a perfect foil for his own style. This is great classic rock by a band at their peak. The six pieces are muscial pictures of the six members, and it's interesting that the three pieces for the original members were on one side while the three for the newer ones were on the other.

Sanctus is a typically keyboard dominated piece from RJG, while Hall of Mirrors highlights Steve Stewart's brilliant guitar playing. For the finale, Francis Lickerish recaptures the magic of Fand with The Dreamer.

The other tracks are less impressive, but still great; Punch and Judy Man and The Ringmaster both rock along nicely, but Once She Was is a something of a lush reminder of their more classical fusions.

This is often the forgotten Enid album, coming as it did at the end of the original band's career, for they folded (for the first of many occasions, the following year). But it deserves a better fate, and is recommended especially to anyone who, like me, found the re-recorded Fand as little too much to take.

Bought this as a gift so I have no idea if its good, but it was well received by my father-in-law who quickly disappeared into his office for a listen.

Better recorded than Touch Me (still my favourite Enid album, but I wish they'd record it again properly), 6 pieces is still very much in the classical instrumental style, it just so happens to be scored for rock band rather than traditional orchestral instruments.

Once She Was has to go down as one of the best orchestral arrangements of an English Folk song ever, and it's not even scored for an orchestra but a 6 piece Rock Band !

Sanctus has the best Elgar tune since Jupiter - Bringer of Jollity.

Little classical tricks abound like the round in The Ring Master.

The only thing lacking from this album is any kind of reference to Gustav Mahler, so conspicuous in just about every other album of note by this band.

An incredibly English sounding album full of restraint, controlled emotion and not a little regret voiced most obviously in Dreamer.

A beautifully poised album.

Caveat Emptor 21 July 2013

Inner Sanctum is no longer licenced to issue Enid product. The quality of any material issued on this label must therefore be regarded as suspect. Band-endorsed and properly-remastered recordings can be found on the Enidi/Operation Seraphim label. Go to the band's offocial website for information.

i like to point that this current cd version (2009),of the album six pieces by the band enid is a good edition...
the label is inner sanctum, and they did a nice job...THIS IS NOT A BOOTLEG OR A CDR!...
the music is made of six induvidual pieces by each member of the band and is all instrumental, no vocals.
i got also the old mantella label version, but this edition is better because got the chess artwork of the original pye vinyl as you can see in the picture.
buy it with confidence, this is a quality edition in both, the sound and the artwork!...
thanks
