Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Six Degrees is a mature response to the fallout of a bygone "acid jazz" era. It takes the consequent pieces and rearranges them with smooth Rhodes finesse. Assisted by live players and technology, De Clive Lowe suggests the inclusion of the usual generic suspects involved in these "nu-jazz" gatherings, principally drum & bass, hip-hop and house, and with touches of Brazilian authenticity also referred to, enough reference points are made available to make this a highly musical and accessible album. Relatively vocal free (apart from the staid "Jazzmatazz" rap of "Melodious Funk") the album is a vehicle for De Clive Lowe's Rhodes fascination and programming skills, which rather frustratingly never break sweat, and although tracks such as the off beat "Motherland" and double bass drops of "Control" create tension, the rest rather creates an atmospheric backdrop; accessible yes, testing no.--Found Sounds

Pleasant mix of styles 25 July 2001
Format:Audio CD
Clive-Lowe has managed to get away with mixing hip-hop, jazz and Drum&Bass on the wonderful album which is Six Degrees. As the album progresses, you start to notice the finer points of the production - the subtle hints to other tracks and "that tambourine that you never noticed before". On first playthrough of the album, it is easy to think that you would get tired of it, but quite the opposite is true. The melodies and production matures on every listen and the excellent sonic quality becomes apparent as you get to know the individual tracks.

This is a fine example of the quality on the Universal Jazz label. Nice use of styles and cross genre approach, one that grows and grows with subsequent listens. Can lose it's way at times but can easily justify 5 stars.
Just kick back and enjoy.

King Of The Funk !!! 7 Aug 2001
By Sean - Published on Amazon.com
I picked this album up a while back, not knowing what I was in for. At first listen it just washed over me and by the time the album came to the end, nothing really stuck in my mind. A few listens later and the album is in constant rotation in my CD player (often with the track 'Cosmic Echoes' just repeating over and over again!) It's comparable to, say, Saint Germain, Llorca or any other recent French 'jazz-house' album, but Mark towers above all his contemporaries partially because his music really is jazz music composed with real instruments. It has all the expected synths, scratches and programmed drum patterns too, but as a whole it stands up as a live sounding jazz album. There are no fillers on the album either -- although Melodious Funk could probably have done without Kiwi rapper King Kapishi's heavily NZ accented verses. To summerise, 'Six Degrees' is a superior collection of summery mood music definately worth the time and money.
