REVIEWS

"The whole shebang is as American as apple pie and handguns in the classroom. Of course there's an almighty conflagration at the climax, but DuBois shapes a tight sentence and the plot crackles along."
-- Sunday Age newspaper

"A well-paced, exciting "what-if" thriller."
-- Irish Independent newspaper

"...DuBois injects such pace into his writing that the story rips breathlessly along."
-- Birmingham (UK) Post

DESCRIPTION

A week is a long time in politics, but six days can destroy democracy...

It should be the happiest days for former special forces agent Drew Connor. Out walking in New Hampshire's White Mountains with his girlfriend Sheila Cass, he has butterflies in his stomach and an engagement ring in his pocket. Then a thunderstorm hits, and they take shelter in what Sheila thinks is a relay station for a state utility. But when Drew enters the building, he realizes they have stepped into something far more sinister.

Bullet-proof checkpoints. Telephone hotlines. A sign by a map that reads INTERNMENT CENTERS. And on a whiteboard a large, handwritten message: CASE SHILOH: ON 9/19 WE TAKE HER BACK! Drew's instinct is to get Sheila out as quickly as possible, and when they stop at a general store, and the police open fire without asking questions, his worst fears are confirmed. Someone wants them dead for what they have seen.

And as Drew and Sheila discover, they have stumbled on a plot to kill the president and overthrow the American government, a plan that is to take place in just six days time. With the conspirators claiming they are terrorists on the run, Drew knows it is going to be hard enough just to stay alive, let alone put a stop to this most deadly of political schemes...

By the award-winning author of RESURRECTION DAY and TWILIGHT, SIX DAYS is a 'what-if' thriller of chilling credibility, a terrifying tale of what can happen when power games are mistaken for politics, and paranoia for patriotism.

Although that's both a good thing and a bad thing. Good, because it means the story is fast-paced, action-filled, and builds to a rewarding and explosive climax that you can just imagine being shown on the silver screen. Bad, because - like most Hollywood blockbusters - the plot is a bit too formulaic, so there's no major surprises to be had along the way. But don't let that put you off; this is still a thumping good read by any standards. The plot is nicely involved, there's a good strong cast of characters, and the whole thing seems well researched and as believable as such a story could be.
Perhaps one minor annoyance is the reference to ficticious technologies and their associated terminology - which can come across as a bit out of place and interrupt the novel's flow. I suppose this is somewhat unavoidable as the story needs to be set slightly in the future (maybe 20 years or so, although this is never explicitly stated) but terms such as 'lapbot' - a futuristic laptop computer - and fantastic inventions such as Head-Up Displays on car windscreens can tend to grate after a while. However DuBois does show a decent amount of restraint so thankfully this isn't too much of a problem.
When all's said and done, if you like the big action thrill-fests such as Air Force One, Top Gun, or the Die Hard series, you'll get plenty of enjoyment from Six Days. Definitely worth taking on holiday for an interesting read on the beach before you crack out Tom Clancy's latest tome.

I just finished reading this book that I first loaned from my library. After a gripping start I found myself hooked to it and finished it within two days. The exploration of the characters is fantastic and the different twists really strike you. Author DuBois has a brilliant way of keeping a cliff hanger at the end of chapters which forces you to read on to see what happens. After reading this book you will be definatly left with the feeling 'what if this happed . .' because I defintly did. The exploration of the characters is great too. I highly recommend this book if you love conspiracys and thrillers. The book is full of shocks and things that you will learn. Highly recommended.

Simply put, if you want a precise, reality based plot then this book isn’t for you. But if you can suspend belief, just a little, and you want a rollercoaster of a read then this book has everything you want… great heroes, nasty villains, an intriguing plot and fast narrative, that’s not bogged down in detail. Right from the start you’re right there with the hero and heroine, looking over their shoulders as they fight to clear their names and expose the truth. Dubois tells you plenty but he also leaves enough to the imagination and he gets the mix right. Sure, I have a few quibbles but nothing that will stop me from recommending the book or going out and buying his first novel “Resurrection Day”.
