DESCRIPTION

As the self-proclaimed biggest coward in the galaxy, Horatio has it easy on what passes for 40th century America. A much-favoured sycophant in the court of the King of Earth, Horatio lives in a genetically engineered paradise where there's a vat-grown slave waiting around every marble column with a bunch of grapes to drop into his oh-so perfectly designed mouth.

Unfortunately for Horatio, the artificial intelligence that rules the great mass of humanity spread across the stars has other plans for this feckless seducer. So, if you ever wonder how the galaxy's biggest coward finds himself actually trying to save it, you're not alone... but then, unfortunately, neither is our hero!

His misadventures are abetted by a psychotic Martian warrior, a robot who thinks it's related to Sherlock Holmes, a beautiful genetically enhanced assassin, a scientist with a computer for a brain, and a millennia-old clone who was alive when the last U.S. President was executed by a firing squad.

It's six against the galaxy. Six against the stars. They'll save the universe... but they might damage it first.

Really worth the read 21 July 2011
By Rose
Format:Kindle Edition
Anyone who is interested in fantasy novels will have heard of Stephen Hunt's groundbreaking Jackelian series. This one, Six Against the Stars, is an oldie but a scifi goldie, and comes off as a cross between Terry Pratchett and Iain M Banks, with an amusing adventure tale featuring a reluctant hero called Horatio Bard, a far-future Terran dilettante who gets spacenapped and taken to the stars, where he has to find a mysterious missing android with a secret that is very important to the future of the Human Trading Alliance (or just the alliance, if you're being informal). Very interesting to see what one of fantasy's greats was up to before he turned his hand to fantasy writing. I'd like some more of these, though, being more of a SF fan than a sword and sorcery reader.

From space opera to fantasy. Stephen Hunt is an author much lauded for his fantasy works, so I was fascinated to see what an early science fiction novel written by him would look like. No surprise, them, that Six against the Stars is every bit as imaginative as his fantasy works. It's a bit like Iain M Banks crossed with Douglas Adams - a fun romp by a reluctant hero thrown into a cruel galaxy and made to try and save it. I won't reveal any more plot that that, as why spoil it for you? Brilliant stuff.

Scifi on overdrive 19 July 2011

With Six Against The Stars, Hunt tackles the sci-fi genre with a verve and relish that will grab you from the first page and carry you along like your ankle's been tied to a spaceship going into warp speed. I've read that this was originally published in 1999 on the old Rocket Reader system - flip its pages open, and you can see where Firefly got a lot of its inspiration from.

Hunt is one of the best novelists working in the field today and Six Against the Stars won't disappoint any reader wanting a fun holiday read or a quick gallop over a weekend. Brilliant, imaginative writing at its best.
