If you're planning to build a Web site for serious e-commerce you don't want to do it from scratch. One solution is Microsoft's Site Server 3.0 and Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition. Combined with the finely granular customer access provided by its Personalisation and Membership features and scalability it does everything you need--but as you might expect, it's non-trivial software.
One of the neatest features of Howard's book is the modular and practical approach he takes to Site Server. You get a huge collection of re-usable VBScripts for Active Server Pages, as you'd expect from a book taking a practical approach, but you're also encouraged to think about the legal and business side of running an e-commerce site and their effects on implementation.
Each chapter takes a building by numbers approach assuming little familiarity with Site Server. However, each also has an Advanced Concepts section at the end. All chapters are task oriented.
For example, chapter six introduces Snap-ins (plug-in features to the uninformed). Though there are many available, it concentrates on those designed to make it easier to work with the Personalisation and Membership features of Site Server.
This is a book for the developer. You're expected to be familiar with IIS, NT and either Access or SQL Server just for a start. However, anyone in the same room as Site Server 3.0 should have this book available. --Steve Patient

This example theme would demonstrate to readers how to incorporate lightweight samples and ideas into their existing web site. Intranet - Using personalization and membership in an Intranet site to control access to items on the network. This would be a higher end example of what personalization and membership could do. The intended audience for this book is three fold. To begin with, program managers and product managers that are interested in furthering their web endeavors and using all of the available tools and resources that Microsoft provides.

With planning being a key element in any large scale Internet or Intranet development effort at least a fourth of the book will be devoted to planning, machine requirements, and development time frames. Secondly, the book will be heavily weighted towards using the Personalization and Membership features of Site Server 3.0 and will appeal directly to developers and consultants who have to implement and solve real world problems with Site Server. Finally the book will provide readers with real world examples that they can then apply to the problem that they are working on.
