Product Description

In April 1968, we were a country at war with ourselves and increasingly with a small country halfway around the world: Vietnam. I don’t recall ever thinking about Vietnam when I started college in 1963. By 1968, it was all any of us could think about. The book begins with my being drafted into the Army and ends with my return to civilian life. I wrote this for my grandchildren, but it will give anyone some sense of what it was like to serve a tour of duty in Vietnam. The job I had gave me an excellent overview of how the gears of the war machine meshed together. I have tried to convey this as best I can.

This is a memoir with a point of view. In these times, when we seem to be constantly marching off to yet another war in yet another faraway place, creating yet more generations of wounded warriors, the lessons learned (and forgotten) from Vietnam are more important than ever.

About the Author

G. J. Lau was born in a small town near Boston. He was raised on a steady diet of family, politics, and the Red Sox. After graduating from Georgetown University, he spent two years in the Army, including a year in Viet Nam in the 1st Infantry Division. He worked in as a radio operator and had the opportunity to serve in many varied locations including a battalion night defensive position, a special forces camp, and an indeterminate piece of real estate populated by scorpions and Montagnards. He then worked for the Federal government in Washington, D.C. until retirement. Since then he has done a stint in retail and now works in elections. He has volunteered as a literacy tutor, a hotline listener and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in need of assistance. He currently resides in a small city just far enough from Washington DC to be somewhere else.

The writer is part of the tactical operations centre operaing a radio so apart from some guard duty on the perimeter there is no in country action as such. It does give an insight into how central operations fuctioned though. Not in the same league as blood trails or dear mom but for the price (kindle edition) worth a read which is why i give it 4 stars

Slow but poignant 28 Nov 2011
By Ron Lealos - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
If you want action and battle, you need to go to O'Brien, Webb, or Caputo. If you want to sweat in the tropical humidity thick enough to cut with a knife, go to someone else. If you want to read about the tour of one man without the hyperbole and swearing, this book is a good reflection of what must have been the GI's experience of the Vietnam War. I didn't put it down feeling I'd been entertained by a great storyteller, just a writer plodding away and recording the ife and times of a grunt.

Good Read 3 Nov 2011

This is not an action packed thriller of combat stories. It is a view of daily life in Vietnam, more over. "A poignant observation of life in the Nam". The Authors remembrance of events and his Ideology of the "Big Picture" is captivating to say the least. You will not be disapointed in reading this well written work.

Good Job Mr. Lau. I Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Quite poignant and personal... 9 Nov 2011

G. J. Lau's recollection of his year in Vietnam was quite moving. Like a previous reviewer stated, it's not an action-packed war memoir. It is simply his memory of what the war was like for him. There isn't a lot of dialogue in this book. It reads more like hearing him tell the story.

This is a good book that adds another piece of the puzzle to our understanding of the war in southeast Asia that had so much impact on our nation and our culture. It's a different perspective from many. It is worth reading. Thank you, Mr. Lau for sharing your story.
