Thierry Poncelet is a master craftsman who is obviously highly skilled at what he does. The portraits he creates - using original antique paintings of people - transformed into the most amusing and appropriate dog somehow look completely natural. The head never looks stuck on and always becomes part of the original painting - the expressions he creates on the new heads is always accurate and looks as though it was meant to be - you cannot tell where the new painting starts as it melds perfectly with the old - you can also see his original works at the Stephanie Hoppen Gallery in Walton Street, London - seeing in the flesh makes the book even more amusing. The text of Bruce McCall is also perfect - capturing the personality of the paintings exactly. Well worth a look.

Fine writing and furry painting 13 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
M.Poncelet's "aristochiens" are hilarious and skillfully and, yes, artistically well done. There are about 70 paintings shown in the book and is a delight. But the diamond-studded collar on this book is the wonderfully creative writing by Bruce McCall. His little vignettes on the subject of each painting are a falling down delight. A grand sense of humor and an even grander sense of history and literary styles of the past make his contribution to this book a true masterpiece. While dog lovers will appreciate the book, even lowly cat people will enjoy the wit, style and imagination of Sit!: The Dog Portraits of Thierry Poncelet. Move over Poirot; Belgium has a new and better representative!
have purchased numerous copies 4 Jun. 2014

Thierry Poncelot portraits are a must for the dog lover. I read that someone brought him an old painting to restore, he did not care for the person's face and painted a dog's face over it, much to the unexpected delight of the owner. He began doing more. Each one is a riot and has a very clever biography of the new face. Some are takeoffs of famous people, such as the theatrical Barrymore family who have been replaced by the famous Burymores, a family of thespian Basset hounds. Each portrait is engaging and very funny. I have given away about a dozen copies as gifts.
Must have for dog lovers 30 Dec. 2010

My mother lent this book out many years ago and never got it back, so I bought this one for her Christmas gift. The artist, Thierry Poncelet, buys old portraits at sales and paints dogs' heads over the faces, and Bruce McCall writes short paragraphs about the lives of the dog/people in the portraits as if they were actual people. It's a hilarious book and the dog-people are often prone to all sorts of scandalous canine behavior! This would be a good gift for a dog lover.

I wanted to paint a picture of my Yorkie in this manner, so this was a good book to copy from. I already had an ornate gold frame.

A perfect coffee table book for those who love dogs. I even have one of his paintings on my wall in my parlor near the book...
