Olivia and Emily become step sisters - but it is only when Rosie comes along that they form an alliance that is to hold for the rest of their lives. 'Try to remember,' says Em, 'that this is my home. We have inherited through MY mother.' 'But MY father.' snaps Liv, ' paid the mortgage and the debts.' 'Girls, girls,' cries Rosie, laughing. 'Not again. Anyway, MY mother, MY father, remember.'

Thus it is, but it is Em and Liv who outlive Rosie.

This is a Sceptre book and therefore you would expect a high level of literacy - and that is just what you get. However, in an understated way it is one of the funniest books to be published in recent times - not obviously funny but full of throw away lines that make you laugh and a plot which is devious, delightful and highly unlikely.

Amazing; gripping; compelling. A new take on sibling rivalry from a black comedy perspective. The family mix is fraught: stepsisters who loathe each other and then comes along a half-sister. Manipulation par excellence, cunning and malice. Willa Marsh - alias Marcia Willet - is perceptive and engaging. She gives an alternative view of the love/hate triangle. I read this twice - and I've only ever done that once before with "Tale of two cities" but I really needed to be certain I understood the staggering twists in the tail. Breathtaking.
