Product Description

Nick Cassavetes directs this adaptation of the tear-jerker novel by Jodi Picoult. Abigail Breslin stars as Anna, a 13-year-old girl who was conceived by IVF in order to be a genetic match for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who has battled leukemia since childhood. Despite being a normal, healthy child, Anna has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions and injections for the sake of her sister's health. Now, when she must forgo the opportunity to go to a prestigious hockey camp in order to donate a kidney to her sister who has gone into renal failure, Anna decides that enough is enough and sues her parents (Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric) for medical emancipation. Alec Baldwin co-stars as Campbell Alexander, the attorney who takes on Anna's case.

My Sister's Keeper [DVD] [2009]

I loved the book so much that I was not sure whether I wanted to see the film - however it is excellent, extremely well acted and directed. The ending of the film was different from the book, but it was logical and didn't detract at all.

Kate is sick, and her parents have an IVF baby, Anna, as a genetic match for Kate so that Anna can donate blood, bone marrow, whatever is necessary to save her sister's life. Eventually Kate becomes sick enough that Anna is expected to donate one of her kidneys to her sister, and she turns to a lawyer to gain medical emancipation from her parents.

Truly superb acting by all. Sofia Vassilieva was splendid as Kate, and Abigail Breslin as Anna. Cameron Diaz, as a fraught mother doing her best to keep her daughter alive by any means, is totally believable - so good to see her in a more stretching role than usual. Alec Baldwin as the lawyer, with health problems of his own, was inspired.

I first watched this in the cinema, and the whole audience was totally caught up in the emotions of the characters - the only sound was quiet sniffling. Very moving and definitely worth watching again.

1.0 out of 5 stars They mucked this up 12 Jun 2012

I'm one of these readers that likes watching the films made from books. I think it helps my imagination boost on what I was already thinking. I do realise that changes sometimes have to be made for time reasons. This film I thought chose the right stars for this film especially (relatively) unknown children stars was inspired casting. Therefore I was really looking forward to watching it. BUT WHY OH WHY DID THEY HAVE TO CHANGE THE ENDING!! The ending in the book was far more emotional and real! For me the book is much better than the film by an enormous amount. For once I'm sorry I saw the film, & warn everyone who has the read the book and LOVED IT that the film ending isn't the same.

Very disappointed Jody Piccoult fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother - just read the book 23 Jun 2012
Format:DVD
Other reviews here say it all really, especially R. Herriot (Ashy Cupcake), who gives my point of view exactly. The film does no justice to the wonderfully rich and moving book. All characters other than Kate are pared down to some extent - yes, even Anna - some were utterly lost (like Jesse, whose story, for me is every bit as important and a vital element in the understanding of how Kate's cancer affects the whole family). Brian's character and his intensely moving relationship with his youngest daughter was also sadly sidelined in the film. I'm particularly fond of secondary characters - the supporting cast - who round a story out and are vital to our understanding of the finer points of the plot. Brian and Jesse are wasted in this film. I thought the only peripheral character who lived up to his book counterpart was Taylor.

And the ending... Well, just don't get me started. Utterly, utterly pointless to change it.

So don't watch this film, do yourself a favour and read the book - you won't regret it.
