I first heard Alex on the BBC web site when they were reviewing new talent for 2011. I found her quirky style and cutesy squeaky voice immediately appealing and sought out her myspace page for more. From there I discovered the freely available Basement Covers EP download was also another source of delight. This 6-track CD provides a good introduction to Alex's music and style. Outstanding ones are Locomotive, Sister Wife and Choice Notes (the latter currently appearing on a TK-Maxx advert in the UK). Less rock-oriented than her debut EP, By The Roots, this collection shows an interesting, upward progression and I am definitely looking forward to a full album from Alex.

If you're here, you've probably heard at least one of Alex's tracks (most likely Choice Notes). Won't dwell on tracks 1-4, as you can freely view on YouTube and/or Alex's sites (Google search). For me, last two tracks are the real draw for this mini EP: "Sweet James" is instantly recognisable as Knock mix - nice catchy pop style; "Fingers and Toes" has echoes of early Kate Bush (especially Kick Inside) - vaguely disturbing lyrics over sugar sweet vocals all tied-up in a theatrical vaudeville presentation - piano and orchestration.

Seriously! This cd is a tease. Only six songs. I need more. I came across "Sister Wife" on Spinner and immediately bought it. Every song is catchy and it's been playing on repeat in my car since I received it in the mail. I hope to hear more from Alex Winston in the future.
