A student earns extra cash by doing the odd job for his private investigator cousin. Accompanied by his girlfriend they set off on the trail of a missing marine scientist, taking them on a search through Europe. Unexpected outcomes to events lead to a conclusion which brings the solutions to mysteries encountered along the way, together nicely.
There is also a musical theme relevant to the story for which the soundtrack containing a varied selection of music, from pop to classical, is included at the end.
The only thing missing is some archery.

It's fairly short. The strength of the story means it could have been fleshed out to full novel length, but i didn't feel cheated by the short length.

I enjoyed the 'Italian Job' opening, but wouldn't have guessed the subject or tone of the rest of the book from that opening, as it is different in style from the rest.

I enjoyed the use of french phrases and words throughout as it gave the book a european theme. Some readers may be frustrated not to get the full meaning of these words and phrases, but most can be worked out from the context of the sentence.

The ending was intelligent and satisfying, although I was grateful for the option of an alternative ending, even if that was also slightly dark.

Definitely worth a read.

I'm not a great fan of mysteries but a fellow reader suggested that I might enjoy Sirene, and I did, probably because there's far more to it than the solving of a mystery.

A scientist is killed on his way to Italy to meet with a long-lost lady friend.

Geekish French Laurent sets off with English Coren, his ill-matched girlfriend, to investigate the murder. The pair don't seem to have very much in common. "They didn't even make each other laugh, somehow they just got along."

As the trail heats up, Laurent decides to send Coren back to their pad in Chamonix for her own safety. But when he vanishes from contact, virtually penniless Coren shows herself to be unexpectedly resourceful as she sets off to find him in Liguria. Not only is she worried about his safety in general, but she knows that he is running critically short of the drugs he needs.

I won't go into the plot any further, that's for the reader to discover, and a neat and original twist is that there are two endings to choose from in the Kindle version.

What pleased me about the book is the author's subtle humour, his obvious knowledge of the places he describes, well-drawn characterisation particularly of Coren, Lucette and the hit-man Kuss, and a cleverly woven plot revolving around contemporary environmental issues. Oh, and he knows how to get the best out of the English language.

There were a couple of places I found rather long-winded, but nevertheless I thought this a worthwhile read and would certainly read more of his work.

A short mystery novel, this story is a little different from most standard mysteries, but in a good way. Set in and around the Ligurian coastline of north western Italy, Laurent is hired to investigate the mysterious death of an environmental scientist working on pollution of the seas around the town of Imperia. Assisted by his girlfriend, Coren, and the scientist's friend, Maddalena, he has to avoid the attentions of assassin, Kuss, who is determined to cover his murderous past by killing Laurent.

Characters are well-drawn, not stereotypical in any way and engaging. Mr Ives writes with a light touch and details of Laurent and Coren's journeys from Chamonix to Liguria are well-described. While the plot in itself is compelling, Mr Ives' style of writing lulls the reader into a false sense of security before exploding into action towards the end of the story. Coren, Laurent's girlfriend, is resourceful, loyal and positive, while Laurent fights his own, personal demons throughout the narrative.

This is the first in a series of stories and I look forward to reading more.

Set a short time in the future.

When classic car enthusiast and marine biologist Gary disappears part time investigator Laurent is asked to investigate.

Laurent and his girlfriend Coren travel through France and Italy on their quest to discover Gary's whereabouts, and discover if there's a link between his disappearance and environmental changes in the Camargue.

Then danger and intrigue enter the story, who is M. Premoli? Can Laurent find him/her and discover what the link is between them?

Living in France I enjoyed the insight into different areas, and could equate with some of the characters, especially Lucette. This book also reinforced my great long time desire to visit Italy.

In conclusion: I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable mystery thriller, very descriptive and laced with interesting information. The alternative ending and insights at the back of the book were the icing on the cake.

Mystery and intrigue are not a genre I normally read. However I enjoyed this story immensely. I was particularly entertained by the quirkiness of each personality. Ives created characters with depth who came to life and leapt off the page with their individuality and unique backstories.
The storyline was compelling and when I wasn't reading, it was never far from my mind. The alternate ending was a real treat and something I've never encountered in any book I've read thus far. This author is obviously of above average intelligence and the care he demonstrated in creating and sharing his story was refreshing. I also quite enjoyed the 'About the Author' section at the end of the book and the soundtrack was great fun! I will definitely be reading other books by this author!
